I would say it means not to love this material, fleshy, physical world, because its not something we will experience for long.

On the other hand, we will experience spiritual realm for eternity, so its the thing we should prepare for and love and find our joy in.

Im making a point. My apologies. Just asking questions to get you to see my own point of veiw.

Im am of the opinion we are to be in the world not of it. There is nothing wrong with ownership, or even having possessions, it's the love of possessions that becomes a problem. Just like money. Money is not the root of all evil. It is the love of money that is the root of all evil.

It is a matter of the spirit. What does one love more than God?

Lol sorry, sometimes reading text can be taken in different ways. I totally agree with you. I'm just really...let's see how do I want to say this...maybe way to cautious about the things I do...or possibly I am scared to sin or do anything wrong lol. A fear of God probably. (I'm too hard on myself lol)

    1John 2:v.15-16
15 "Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world."

We are living in the world of Devil, so who has the Spirit of God needs to discern what pleases God and what does not please God. JESUS interceded for us with the Father, saying: John 17: v.14-16:
14 I have given them thy Word(the Word is God); and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
15 I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.
16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

The Devil taketh JESUS up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; And said unto JESUS: "All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me". Mat.4:v.8-9

    James 4:v.7-10
7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.
10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

Romans 14:v.22 - Hast thou faith? have it to thyself before God. Happy is he that condemneth not himself in that thing which he alloweth.

    James 4:v.4-5
4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.
5 Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?

Fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. And the second part of that?

but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

It is smart. It is good to be 'fearful' in the presence of the Lord concerning one's own actions, and look for instruction. That comes with maturity friend. I would say you are on the right path being mindful enough to even ask.

    John 16:v.7-14

7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

    9 Of sin, because they believe not on me;

    10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;

11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.

12 I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.

13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

15 All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

Certainly we can "like" things of this world, but loving something means placing it ahead of everything else in our life. God wants to be first in our lives, not money or education or power or prestige.

I note how John in 1 John 2:15 says not to love this world's things. Then he gives this list of the world's things > "the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life".

So, he does not list physical things like a cell phone, or money, or cars, or marital intimacy. But what matters is how we are about this things, in our hearts (1 Corinthians 6:12). I personally understand how lust is a dominating drive which won't take no for an answer, is not thanking God for a blessing, not maybe really enjoying something (feed on 1 Timothy 6:17) because the lust is so busy with driving and pushing for the thing, and using people to get it . . . instead of first tenderly caring for any and all people and appreciating any way they help us to get something nice or helpful. Lust can use others and waste the person who is lusting.

But love does not have us just use any person, but we care tenderly for any and all people, and first love them while we might have them doing something for us.

Lust can be more of an entitled emotion or drive, so it is a pride thing. And so, now I can see . . . the lust of the eyes and and lust of the flesh are connected with the pride of life.

I am having a hard time relating my post that you quoted:

It is smart. It is good to be 'fearful' in the presence of the Lord concerning one's own actions, and look for instruction. That comes with maturity friend. I would say you are on the right path being mindful enough to even ask.

In relation to the lust of the flesh. Can you explain your meaning?

It goes further than that. In a global economy, as long as some are made to work as slaves, we will all work as slaves.

It simply serves self before others, including God. Self interest is the original sin. We were told to put the will of the Father first but nooooo. If we do His will and love all as self we will no longer place self interest first, seeking gain at the expense of others and redefining good and evil to self justify our ways. God's will for us which is love all as self counteracts the traditional self serving ways of man.

You are saying we are wise to fear God. Lust can take us elsewhere. So, we need to fear God, by not doing what lust of the flesh would have us do.

And yes I would say this takes maturity. And maturity means how God cures our character so that more and more readily and even easily we stay with loving, instead of giving in to pleasure drives, among other things. We love, instead of using people for what we want, but lust of the flesh can have us only using people, in different ways. So, because we fear God, with maturity we more and more desire to love, instead of giving in to lust stuff.

Actually, this is my experience along with God's word, I would say.

To expound, that would be true concerning sin itself. Any sin actualy. All of it takes us elsewhere, rather than to God.

    Colossians 3:v.2-4 advise:
2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.
4 When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with Him in glory.

Reading the advise above, we can see what will be the future of each one according his choice, it because THE WORLD OF DEVIL IS ALREADY IN TOTAL CHAOS, AND IS ALREADY GOING TO THE ETERNAL FIRE.

One thing is right; In the face of world chaos, the way is open to manifest the false messiah IN THE DAYS AHEAD, who is the lamb with two horns because he represents two KINGDOMS, in fact a false lamb, and he speaks like a Dragon (Revelation 13:v.11).

Everything will change excessively from now on, that is, while the Devil's world is descending into the abyss, into the ETERNAL FIRE, the true people of God begins to ascend towards the third heaven, the Kingdom of God, but remember Acts 14: v.22: "that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God."

    Peter the Apostle prophesied: 2Pe.3:v.7&10-14:
7 But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

10 But the Day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; (the seventh and last Day or seventh and last millennium) in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.
11 Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,
12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?
13 Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.
14 Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.

Again: THE WORLD OF DEVIL IS ALREADY IN TOTAL CHAOS, AND IS ALREADY GOING TO THE ETERNAL FIRE.

Be ready, or, get ready, and be very careful of yourself.

Prayerfully careful . . . thank you for your good advice; God bless you, too :)

"Não te deixes vencer do mal,
mas vence o mal com o bem."
    (Romanos 12:21)

"E a paz de Deus, para a qual também fostes chamados em um corpo, domine nos vossos corações; e sede agradecidos." (Colossenses 3:15)

Always, we can be thanking God, then. We can always be with God.

    As you know, we cannot forget that we are living in the last days, days of perilous times. 1Tim.4:v.1-2 warn us, saying: 1 - The Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; 2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;

But JESUS had said before the Apostle Paul that spiritually the environment would be polutted, as is written in Matthew 24:v.3-5 and 10-15:

3 The disciples came unto JESUS privately, saying, Tell us,
when shall these things be? and what shall be the SIGN of thy coming, and of the END of the WORLD?

4 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no MAN deceive you.

5 For many shall come in MY NAME, saying, I am Christ ; and shall deceive many. -
Mainly the false messiah of the Jews, as prophesied JESUS in John 5:v.43 speaking of that IMPOSTER - the ABOMINATION of DESOLATION -

10 And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.

11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.

12 And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.

13 But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.

14 And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.

15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand)

May our Lord GOD bless us, and keep us, and give us His protectio
    Amen

As the saying goes, you can't take anything with you when you die. Fancy cars, cash, expensive shoes..... when you die none of that goes with you in the coffin because it's all temporal. Try to love God about all else. Obviously we will find things to keep us happy and busy. But we must not let them lead our life to the point of we leave God on the side.
