In western societies Catholics have about same size families as everyone else so this claim is more of Pro forma than proof of any actual avoidance of contraceptives.

Nice. I take it you did not grow up with the negative sexuality attitude my wife and I did.

That information would have saved me from being totally shocked when a friend of mine disclosed to me her "dirty little secret" - that she masturbated a LOT.

I had no idea such a thing was even possible ... it boggled the mind ... which means I totally missed what she was implying.

Well, yes, Catholic lay folk ignore the official position cheerfully and consistently. But in terms of formal teaching, Catholics are the only mainstream Christian group I know who have a harsh anti-contraception stance.

As for education, my mother brought out her nursing textbooks. Which were heavy on accurate anatomy, and less good on the relational side of things...

I like what I was able to see of it, though the Amazon "look inside" only shows the introductory pages; it would be nice to be able to see a sample page or two from the middle of the book. The analogy of one's body being like a car is good, and one I hadn't thought of. (As with a car, the author says, you want to know how everything works and how to drive it well in order to get the most enjoyment out of it.)
