Catholics say Orthodox subverted in this case because Christ prohibited divorce and that's why the Catholic Church does not allow it.

Note: Yes, talking about Catholicism is important regarding some Orthodox theology especially if they have a criticism, so whatever bros.

Catholics also fall into the heresy of Donatism with their theology around annulments, since the husband and wife are the actual celebrants conferring the sacrament of marriage on each other. An annulment declares that one of the two celebrants was deficient in some way such that no sacrament took place which is the definition of Donatism.

Annullments was a 9th century invention. It was a way for monarchs, rulers and nobles to be released from their wives so their inheritance and power could be given to the offspring of their mistress (future wife). This was important in cases where the legal wife was sterile or the legitimate offspring were born disabled.
This is why the earliest historical examples of annullments all involve kings. One of the first was King Lothair II around 860 who needed to rid his wife as she was sterile. King Henry is probably the most famous example. It was a tool for the elites to make sure their inheritance passed onto the strongest legitimate heir and in ways make once legitimate offspring illegitimate and not able to claim anything.

I don't know if you have seen the thread farther down the page here on St. Justin's regarding divorce. It's got some good things in it.
Yes I have often wondered how the very early church handled it.
