Brethren were actually a strictly American-grown pietist movement. The Brethren started in Pennsylvania during the Second Great Awakening, not Germany, even though it involved exclusively German-Americans. The energy from the movement came from the same kind of religiosity that was frequent in frontier America, just absorbed by German-American immigrants who faced language and cultural barriers to participation in the Great Awakening.
