Trump was accused of wanting CDC cuts, but Obama on multiple occasions wanted to cut the CDC as well. Obama also fired the head of the epidemic team before the 2014 Ebola outbreak, only to hire a Ebola Czar after the epidemic hit. Democrats only criticize Trump though.

Kenneth Bernard is a retired Rear Admiral and physician, who served as a special assistant to the president for security and health during the Clinton and George W. Bush administrations. He also served in the top role in the Clinton National Security Council. Here is what he said.

Under Obama’s NSC, Bernard says the office was downgraded again, until the 2014 Ebola crisis emerged, and President Barack Obama appointed “Ebola Czar” Ron Klain. National Security Advisor Susan Rice later institutionalized the office in 2015, calling it the Directorate for Global Health and Security and Biodefense.

Experts blame China, not the CDC.

Exclusive: U.S. slashed CDC staff inside China prior to coronavirus outbreak

Zhu and other sources said U.S. leaders should not have been relying on the China CDC director for alerts and updates. In general, they said, officials in China downplayed the severity of the outbreak in the early weeks and did not acknowledge evidence of person-to-person transmission until Jan. 20.

On Feb. 25, the first day the CDC told the American public to prepare for an outbreak at home, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo accused China of mishandling the epidemic through its “censorship” of medical professionals and media.

Some health experts were skeptical that more CDC employees operating inside China would have made a difference in stemming the outbreak. Beijing has been widely criticized for silencing its own public health officials who warned of a deadly new respiratory disease emanating from the Chinese city of Wuhan and surrounding Hubei province.

“The problem was China, not that we didn’t have CDC people in China,” said Scott McNabb, a former CDC epidemiologist who is now a research professor with Emory University. He pointed to China’s censorship as the main culprit in the spread of the pandemic, which has infected at least 435,470 people worldwide, killed 19,598 and upended the global economy.

Plan? I guess it was to have a bunch of bureaucrats sit around, collect their salaries and when the virus showed up they would have yelled loudly ( like a fire alarm) "Hey, look out there's a pandemic! ". That would have been so helpful wouldn't it?

The plan was to hope that oppressive communist China didnt sensor the information they had on the outbreak. Some people have claimed they did just that, censored the data.

The CDC is run by doctors. Trump is not a doctor in the CDC. Do you want Trump making decisions that Doctors should be making?

The FDA and CDC were created by and are funded by Congress and are subject to Congressional oversight as well as being under the supervision of the Executive Branch.

The President nominates leadership roles and Congress approves them. Congress also has oversight powers.

What mistake did the CDC and or the FDA leadership make?

Yes, however in 2004 Congress gave full authority to the FDA/CDC. No congressional action was necessary:

"The Project BioShield Act of 2004 was designed to provide additional and more flexible authorities and funding to financially support the development and procurement of MCMs against CBRN threats. It also gave the FDA Commissioner the authority to issue Emergency Use Authorizations (EUAs) to authorize the use of unapproved medical products or unapproved uses of approved medical products during CBRN emergencies.

These authorities were further delineated, clarified, expanded, and extended in 2006 by PAHPA, which authorized the establishment of BARDA within HHS, and in 2013 by PAHPRA, which, among other things, reauthorized components of PAHPA and expanded the FDA Commissioner’s authorities to permit the use of unapproved products or unapproved uses of approved products during emergency."

Not going to do a replay with you on this...the FDA/CDC had full authority to delegate testing requiring no Congressional oversight or action. We discussed this at length...the FDA/CDC are under the executive branch, whether you like it or not!

There were no budget cuts made to the CDC. Trump proposed cuts but they were not authorized by congress. Obama also wanted to cut CDC funding. Was Obama to blame for that? Did Obama fail to protect the US because he wanted budget cuts made to the CDC on multiple occasions?

They still had the responsibility to ensure a safe and proper test. Thats what the CDC and FDA were doing. The problem only arose after the CDC had problems with their own test. What problem exactly? and who's fault is that problem exactly? You dont know but you rush in to blame Trump anyway.

They couldn't use unapproved tests. Could you imagine just approving any test? That would be foolish. The FDA did clear away restrictions, im willing to bet however that they streamlined the process but still had some confidence in the test they approved.

Go ahead and bet...the fact remains we were FAR behind other countries in testing, simple fact. January 11 was when the necessary info for developing tests was made available... as was shown to you we did receive test from Italy, other countries had tests available... so twist and squirm any which way you want but the Jan. 22nd "we totally have it under control" was not true at all......

You dont know if we could have gotten those Italy tests earlier, or what process we had to go through before accepting those tests.

Actually no I don't...yet there he is:
Trump thinks he may have 'a natural ability' to address viral outbreaks
because apparently? What his "gut" tells him is what should determine how the government should react, not doctors.
Trump vs Fauci: President's gut sense collides with science

tulc(thanks Needs answers for pointing that out)

When did they become available? Did the CDC have to first approve Italy's test?
