Hi mukk,
I agree that the effort to impeach won't get enough support in the Senate to pass, but...
It will give daylight to a lot of what's going on and may, therefore, cause some to stop and say, "Uhhh, maybe I shouldn't give this guy another 4 years." Now, I fully understand that a lot of his supporters will just dig in their heels and that's also to be expected. However, votes are votes and while 90% of President Trump's supporters may stick with him, it only takes 10% to turn and possibly change the outcome of the next election. I think that's what the Democrats are looking for.
They want to show what they believe to be the truth concerning President Trump and his activities in hopes of turning away 10-15% of his supporters. Did you read the article about VP Pence in Michigan on an island where cars are pretty much illegal? Certainly an eight car motorcade was likely more than was necessary and VP Pence should have been sensitive to that issue. In that article there were a few comments from people who had voted the Trump/Pence ticket that claimed they wouldn't do so again. So, if these efforts by the Democrats can cause 10-15% of Trump's supporters to question their allegiance, then they will have succeeded in their efforts.
Right now, it looks like Trump won't be able to carry Michigan as he did in the previous election. Yes, it's by a slim margin, but all it takes is that slim margin to send the electoral votes the other way. The Democrats and Independents understand how the process works. Since the last election they even understand it better. The last election was close, as far as the popular vote, and 10-15% could make for a completely different outcome next election. We'll see.
As far as whether or not President Trump will be impeached is going to depend on what the evidence shows. I think it's telling that the Senate voted unanimously for the WH to release the whistleblower report. There may be a few Republicans who are really beginning to question the effectiveness of this administration. It will only take 20 Republicans out of 53 to approve impeaching the President. We already know that there are at least 3 or 4 that have questioned the President's activities already. Some may even be seeing that these political shenanigans could cause lasting damage to the Republic itself. As a matter of fact, Sen. Graham even prophesied that electing Donald Trump would destroy the Republican party, although it seems clear that he wouldn't still say so. What's it going to be like when people campaigning for national office ask foreign governments to aid them in winning? Will we begin to see some quid pro quo where a candidate offers certain promises to foreign nations for help in winning an election?
These are issues that may come up in the future of our Republic, if such activities are deemed to be allowable.
God bless,
In Christ, ted
