As Trump waffles, some Democrats talk up mandatory gun buybacks, licensing

After the mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton earlier this month, Swalwell’s proposal for a mandatory buyback of all assault-style weapons was embraced by the congressman who represented the Texas border city, former Rep. Beto O’Rourke — giving the idea its highest-profile platform yet.

Robert Francis O'Rourke supports confiscation of certain types of weapons.

That would be confiscation with compensation -

But still confiscation, because it would be mandatory

As the candidates jockey against each other, the proposals become more and more extreme, but gun confiscation -- all of them -- was always the goal for most of these people.

Being forced (mandatory), to surrender a personal possession.

That’s the problem. Wether you are compensated for it or not.

I thought y’all had the guns to prevent these things from happening in the first place.

No, I’m saying I thought you already had the solution to this problem.

Wasn’t the whole point of the 2nd Amendment to prevent a tyrannical government from taking over? Looks like the 2Aers will have to finally put their words into action.

You regard the Democratic Party as the architects of a plan for a tyrannical government for wanting to confiscate guns?

I didn’t think I would ever hear that.

Not at all. I think the gun buyback is a reasonable approach. It’s up to the gun owners to decide what they’re going to do about it.

It is reasonable to cease private property?

I don’t see much difference between this and eminent domain laws.

Just be happy they want to pay you. The government took the Native Americans property without even paying them in most cases.

If the property is illegally possessed, yes. They’ll take your cocaine and heroin too.

That's the problem though. It only works on law biding citizens, not criminals.

The headline isn't wrong, but Beto isn't currently a very credible candidate. You'll find various Democrats -- and Republicans -- saying lots of weird things.

They're not, even if they should be. This was from candidates trying to find a way to get back into the game.

The same is true with literally every law.
