Democratic megadonor urges Pelosi and Schumer to pick a candidate in a bid to stop Bernie Sanders

Democratic megadonor Bernard Schwartz has started reaching out to party leaders, particularly House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, to encourage them to back a candidate for president in order to stop the surge of Sen. Bernie Sanders.

"We should know who is the best person to beat Donald Trump, and with all due respect, Bernie Sanders cannot beat Trump," he explained, describing the message he has relayed to the two Democratic leaders.

Schwartz noted he has yet to hear back from them but insisted that, with Super Tuesday under a week away, party leaders have to take a stand now before Sanders captures the nomination — and, in his view, takes down the party.

Looks like they are trying to steal it from Bernie again?

Not "steal", "defeat". Supporters of candidates do what they can to get their favorite candidate elected -- hand out flyers, talk to people, post signs, donate money. That's how campaigns go. It's unfortunate that money plays such a big part, but at the moment, that's how the game is played. It's not so different from rich guys like Tom Steyer or Michael Bloomberg pouring their own money into their campaigns.

If you like Sanders, then vote for him in your state's primary. You don't have to obey any TV commercials or any congressional leaders. Vote for the candidate you think is best.

I'm surprised, though, that you're a Sanders supporter, since your profile says "US-Republican". Are you truly politically liberal?

You regularly post anything that you think makes Democrats or the Democratic party look bad. The other side does the same thing to Republicans. It's a competition we all know that.

We need to end Citizens United, which allows corporations to pour unlimited money into campaigns by calling it free speech.
One of the best bumper stickers I ever saw said " I'll believe a corporation is a peson when Texas executes one of them."
Unfortunately, people like Bloomberg should not be allowed to influence elections with money either. Until we get the money out of the system we are fighting an uphill battle. Too many people are easily swayed by ads and soundbites. It's the dumbing down of America

I'll believe a corporation is not an individual when the government stops taxing them. People like Bernie should not be allowed to influence elections with money either. Bernie is attempting to bribe a subset of voters with government money worth much more than Bloomberg's entire worth hoping they will be swayed by promises of free stuff.

Lol. Ok for ppl who've never heard of Bernard Schwartz, I just looked him up. Dude was born in 1925.
I mean God bless him, that's totally awesome that he's still civically engaged. Yes I know Trump & Sanders are also super old but this dude is super, super old & Idk that he has his finger on the pulse of what's happening now.

My friends in LA are going to see Sanders at the LA Convention Centre on Sunday. He used to be at smaller venues but they weren't big enough. The ppl who will be part of the event are pretty diverse showing the broad demographic range he appeals to. So there's a super popular rap group, this actor I found out about bc of here (name is Dick Van Dyke & he was in the original Mary Poppins!), a Jewish comedienne.

I'm a Zoomer, he's loved. There's Boomers who love him too. This singer from the 70s who is actually super great just endorsed him, slammed Trump.

Oh please; now that is quite a leap!
Our taxes already go to corporations, through corporate welfare which they call subsidies. And they profit from resources that God gave to everyone for free, while paying pennies on the dollar for them. They are our taxes and should be used for the common good. Corporation's only motive is profit, and that motivation has caused incalcuable harm, to the people and the planet.

You and I cannot actually have a reasonable argument about just about anything because we have completely different ideas about what is and is not a self evident truth. I just do not agree with your basic assumption that all it takes to build a corporation is to simply pick up what God gave us for free. I suppose the idea is that other people were just, for some unknown, unaware they could pick up that stuff for free , so they unwittingly paid someone else to acquire it. Perhaps while stepping over those same things that were just lying there freely provided by God. Additionally I do not agree with your basic assumption that a corporation's only motive is profit or that being motivated by profit causes incalculable harm to people or that a corporation being motivated by profit would have to harm the planet.

Poor Bernie. Ripped off once and about to be ripped off again. I do feel sorry for him. Not that I want him anywhere near the White House. The Senate needs a crazy Socialist, just one, and that's fine, but he should stay there.

What it illustrates is the division within the Democratic Party when Bernie wins in multiple states by appealing to the Party rank and file but the elites need to deny him the nomination. There is already a civil war inside the Democratic Party and it cannot finish until the Democrats divide. IMHO. It's like how the Republicans were deeply divided over Trump, and for the most part the non-Trumpists have either left or have been marginalized.

Of course you do, you're a Republican. As an independent voter, I don't want to see him as the nominee, I'd like to have a responsible choice this time.

What scares me is Bernie winning. But then all of the Democrats running scare me. And that Republican scares me too.

Can someone tell me how the Democrats can avoid civil war running hot from the Spring and into December? I don't see it. I think the elites will figure out how to stop Bernie but then the Bernie voters come unglued.

Because you think Sanders is a good second choice in case Trump loses, or because you think Sanders would lose to Trump?

If it's because you think Sanders would lose to Trump, then maybe you can see why some Democrats would campaign against Sanders.

Not in armies forming to fight it out in fields, no. But in people refusing to campaign for their new enemies, yes. And voting for the enemies of their new enemies, yes. And forming breakaway parties, yes. Or figuring out how to take over from the inside in four years, meh, maybe but I doubt it.
