Delaying the trial is the talk of the town. There are lots of advantages to the administration and to McConnell. Lots of folks can get approved. The first COVID steps can be taken. Also, the meetings on the stimulus can happen.
=========
There is even advantage for Pelosi. Delaying would allow Pelosi's folks to better develop a case. More information is needed on

1) Trump's tweets and phone calls over the past 2 months.

2) Trump's communications with the planners and primary groups over the 2 weeks leading up to the attack.

3) Trump's communications in the day or two before, especially with police, and those who might have cased the capitol the day before.

4) Trump's communications while the attack was taking place, include an contacts with police.

Unreal, since when do you conduct an investigation after you have impeached the President? I would recommend that the whole process is delayed until February the 30th. that would be appropriate considering how things have been done so far.

As long as it is done in the end. Justice must come to bear against Trump and he must not be allowed to seek office again. He has done far too much damage already, and showed no signs of remorse, let alone reformation of his character.

Maybe 1 April would be better. Then Chuck and Nancy can spring out of a closet waving their arms and say "We was only kidding. April Fool."

Delaying the trial is the talk of the town. There are lots of advantages to the administration and to McConnell.
The way I look at it is this:
Trump is a lost cause (damaged goods), he will never have enough people to vote him president again.
He will always have his most hardened fans. They will never stop being his fans, no matter what he does.
There are lots of them, and they would otherwise be strong Republican supporters.
Trump is no longer the president, Biden is
If Trump continues to be popular with Republican supporters then the Republican party is at risk of continuing to be at the mercy (held hostage) by Trump.

Given this, the Democratic party politically have nothing to gain from removing Trump and banning him from running from office. In doing this they only help the Republican party.

The Republican party have everything to gain (politically) from banning Trump.

However, the Democratic Party are going through with impeachment and removal because it is the right thing to do. To set precedence for any future president, and for unity of the country as another Trump presidency would be even more divisive than this last one.

My thoughts of the Republican party is that they don't care at all about the "right" thing to do. Ordinarily they will just protect their own leader (especially if they are popular with the Republican voters). But Republican party members only care about politics, and it makes sense to be done with Trump, cast him into the wastebin and move on.
If they don't Trump might win the Republican primary OR might start a competing conservative party.

The risk for those in the Republican party, those that vote against Trump in the Senate trial, they might then loose alot of their supporters for the next round of elections.
So it's not a forgone conclusion.
But I do expect that Mitch would be pleading with Pelosi to delay sending the articles to the Senate in order to give him time to drum up support amongst Republican Senators to vote against Trump.

McConnell privately says he wants Trump gone but faces backlash—CNN obtains 9-point memo to get rid of Trump - CNNPolitics
As the House prepares to send articles of impeachment to the Senate on Monday, CNN has learned that dozens of influential Republicans around Washington -- including former top Trump administration officials -- have been quietly lobbying GOP members of Congress to impeach and convict Donald Trump.

The trial has been delayed by over 2 weeks, to the week of February 8th.

This is great news for Biden. Most of his critical appointments will be approved. The rest will be "acting" and in place. The COVID protocols will be in place, with a schedule of when vaccines will be delivered. Biden's immigration bill will be in committee for extended discussion. The rules of the Senate will be set.
And, there will have been much negotiation on a stimulus package. The administration will then be able to have a reasonable start.

When the trial begins, that will be all that goes on in the Senate, except for negotiations and perhaps a few committee meetings.

McConnell will count heads. I think that he would very much like to rid the party of Trump, IF the votes are there. 2 1/2 weeks will give the prosecution lots of time to develop much more information about discussions in weeks running up to January 6th, and what Trump knew about the plans for that day. Much will be known about Trump's tweets and conversations the day before and on the day itself. And, we will know what requests Trump made of the capitol police.

The prosecution will have time to consider what witnesses to bring forward, perhaps including the Secretary Of State of Georgia.

In short, the prosecution will have time to flesh out the case. Trump will have time to prepare a defense, prepared by his usual very weak lawyers.
========
The case will be presented in detail, and as should happen, the jury will pay close attention for a week or two. Then they will decide whether there is enough political cover to vote for conviction.

The reason Republicans won’t convict is that there are enough Trump fans that anyone who votes to convict will lose positions within the party and primaries.

That is the fear.

IF McConnell has the votes to convict, then there would be solid fight for the control of the party, with Trump having been impeached twice and forbidden from ever running for office again.

Only the 15-20 Republican Senators who are up for re-election in 2022. Without Trump being able to run he will slowly lose power so the Senators up for re-election in 2024 and especially 2026 have less to fear. Additionally Grassley is retiring, Ron Johnson has said before he would retire (though has been vague more recently). And the Republican Party would be stupid not to throw all of their weight behind the mainline candidate in a competitive seat and not allow a crazed conspiracy theorist steal the primary only to get throttled in the general against a Democrat.
