Proverbs 23
Everyone read Chapter 23 if it is the 23th day of the month today. Come back and give us your thoughts....Tishri1 :wave:

Proverbs 23New International Version (NIV)
Saying 7
23 When you sit to dine with a ruler,
note well what[a] is before you,
2 and put a knife to your throat
if you are given to gluttony.
3 Do not crave his delicacies,
for that food is deceptive.

Saying 8
4 Do not wear yourself out to get rich;
do not trust your own cleverness.
5 Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone,
for they will surely sprout wings
and fly off to the sky like an eagle.

Saying 9
6 Do not eat the food of a begrudging host,
do not crave his delicacies;
7 for he is the kind of person
who is always thinking about the cost.[b]
“Eat and drink,” he says to you,
but his heart is not with you.
8 You will vomit up the little you have eaten
and will have wasted your compliments.

Saying 10
9 Do not speak to fools,
for they will scorn your prudent words.

Saying 11
10 Do not move an ancient boundary stone
or encroach on the fields of the fatherless,
11 for their Defender is strong;
he will take up their case against you.

Saying 12
12 Apply your heart to instruction
and your ears to words of knowledge.

Saying 13
13 Do not withhold discipline from a child;
if you punish them with the rod, they will not die.
14 Punish them with the rod
and save them from death.

Saying 14
15 My son, if your heart is wise,
then my heart will be glad indeed;
16 my inmost being will rejoice
when your lips speak what is right.

Saying 15
17 Do not let your heart envy sinners,
but always be zealous for the fear of the Lord.
18 There is surely a future hope for you,
and your hope will not be cut off.

Saying 16
19 Listen, my son, and be wise,
and set your heart on the right path:
20 Do not join those who drink too much wine
or gorge themselves on meat,
21 for drunkards and gluttons become poor,
and drowsiness clothes them in rags.

Saying 17
22 Listen to your father, who gave you life,
and do not despise your mother when she is old.
23 Buy the truth and do not sell it—
wisdom, instruction and insight as well.
24 The father of a righteous child has great joy;
a man who fathers a wise son rejoices in him.
25 May your father and mother rejoice;
may she who gave you birth be joyful!

Saying 18
26 My son, give me your heart
and let your eyes delight in my ways,
27 for an adulterous woman is a deep pit,
and a wayward wife is a narrow well.
28 Like a bandit she lies in wait
and multiplies the unfaithful among men.

Saying 19
29 Who has woe? Who has sorrow?
Who has strife? Who has complaints?
Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes?
30 Those who linger over wine,
who go to sample bowls of mixed wine.
31 Do not gaze at wine when it is red,
when it sparkles in the cup,
when it goes down smoothly!
32 In the end it bites like a snake
and poisons like a viper.
33 Your eyes will see strange sights,
and your mind will imagine confusing things.
34 You will be like one sleeping on the high seas,
lying on top of the rigging.
35 “They hit me,” you will say, “but I’m not hurt!
They beat me, but I don’t feel it!
When will I wake up
so I can find another drink?”

Footnotes:
  1. Proverbs 23:1 Or who
  2. Proverbs 23:7 Or for as he thinks within himself, / so he is; or for as he puts on a feast, / so he is

Hi,
It will be tommow, the 23rd soon here in Oregon.
This week is better for me, and taking what little but accurate instuctions that I can from Proverbs, started by the gal Tishri1*** or something like that, has made my life better, as some things I did not have right. Other things I did not know.
I am pleased for her work.
LOVE,
...Mary., .... .

I was thinking about verse 13 earlier today and how some people use it to justify spanking kids. But, it doesn't just talk about spanking, but also discipline. Even God disciplines his children. It is evidence of his love. For if he didn't care about us he wouldn't take the time to correct us for our good. There is a difference between beating a child out of anger and discipline which is for our benefit and out of love.

13 Do not withhold discipline from a child;
if you punish them with the rod, they will not die.

This proverb reminds me of politics and worldliness. I'm not saying that's what it means but that's what i think of when reading it. Food can be seen as doctrine or teaching and can be either worldly or spiritual, and wine can be seen as doctrine as well, in my opinion. This food can come from many places, even from politicians.

Saying 7
23 When you sit to dine with a ruler,
note well what[a] is before you,
2 and put a knife to your throat
if you are given to gluttony.
3 Do not crave his delicacies,
for that food is deceptive.

Dont crave the words of politicians because they are deceptive

Saying 8
4 Do not wear yourself out to get rich;
do not trust your own cleverness.
5 Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone,
for they will surely sprout wings
and fly off to the sky like an eagle.

Dont waste yourself trying to get rich, you never know when you may just lose it all, its better to be content with simple things. Don't follow politicians who promise prosperity of any kind, whether it be jobs or healthcare

Saying 12
12 Apply your heart to instruction
and your ears to words of knowledge.

Apply my heart to the doctrine of Christ and his apostles instead of following worldly men.

Saying 14
15 My son, if your heart is wise,
then my heart will be glad indeed;
16 my inmost being will rejoice
when your lips speak what is right.

I think the Lord is pleased that i follow him instead of men. Although this proverb may not be the Lord himself speaking, i like to see it that way anyhow.

Saying 15
17 Do not let your heart envy sinners,
but always be zealous for the fear of the Lord.
18 There is surely a future hope for you,
and your hope will not be cut off.

Don't envy worldly politicians and those who follow them, but instead be content with the Lord whos word endures forever and whos promise is faithful. Instead give complete reverence to the Lord alone, and to his help and leading alone.

Saying 16
19 Listen, my son, and be wise,
and set your heart on the right path:
20 Do not join those who drink too much wine
or gorge themselves on meat,
21 for drunkards and gluttons become poor,
and drowsiness clothes them in rags.

Amen, follow the Lords wisdom, be content with simple things and be clothed in the spirit.

23 Buy the truth and do not sell it—
wisdom, instruction and insight as well.

Labor to gain Gods wisdom, insight and instruction. Dont sell it, dont trade it for any worldly wisdom or knowledge

Saying 18
26 My son, give me your heart
and let your eyes delight in my ways,
27 for an adulterous woman is a deep pit,
and a wayward wife is a narrow well.
28 Like a bandit she lies in wait
and multiplies the unfaithful among men.

Give God my whole heart, let my eyes delight in the ways of holiness instead of political things. Politics and worldliness are like an adulterous woman. Politics are idolatry (spiritual adultery) Don't be unfaithful to the Lord, dont follow others who follow the world

When will I wake up so I can find another drink?”

I think of this scripture. It refers to being drunk but not on wine. This is how i see the world and its politics.

Isaiah 29:8 as when a hungry person dreams of eating,
but awakens hungry still;
as when a thirsty person dreams of drinking,
but awakens faint and thirsty still.
So will it be with the hordes of all the nations
that fight against Mount Zion.
9 Be stunned and amazed,
blind yourselves and be sightless;
be drunk, but not from wine,
stagger, but not from beer.
10 The Lord has brought over you a deep sleep:
He has sealed your eyes (the prophets);
he has covered your heads (the seers).
11 For you this whole vision is nothing but words sealed in a scroll. And if you give the scroll to someone who can read, and say, “Read this, please,” they will answer, “I can’t; it is sealed.” 12 Or if you give the scroll to someone who cannot read, and say, “Read this, please,” they will answer, “I don’t know how to read.”

13 The Lord says:

“These people come near to me with their mouth
and honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
Their worship of me
is based on merely human rules they have been taught.
14 Therefore once more I will astound these people
with wonder upon wonder;
the wisdom of the wise will perish,
the intelligence of the intelligent will vanish.”
15 Woe to those who go to great depths
to hide their plans from the Lord,

Hi,

Time passed after reading your words. Surely this man must be wrong... More time passed. Still this was not reread.

Bateman de Patrick, arrived. He talked. On his words and thoughts though, I cannot wait. Then just like college I waded in. College has always been hard on me. I came in early. I stated on twenty two.

Here it is, 23. The words of Poster0 were there to see.

Yes, you say you may not be right, but significantly your words seem to apply.

LOVE,

I'm sure you're right, katerinah. Mind you, different rules seem to apply to mischievous cats. When my wife raised her hand to our Percy, you could see he was scared, because he sensed, he knew she was angry. When I slapped him, it was in a measured way, to discipline him. Sensing this, however, he seemed to juts laugh at me ! But I'm sure young humans are different and respond to discipline !

It's interesting that mother cats will clip their kittens, who will sometimes perhaps laugh at her, in the same way that Percy laughed at me, and deliberately 'wind her up', just to see her respond - and jump out of the way ! Which reminds me of how birds sometimes taunt cats sitting behind a window.

Hardly, a spiritually edifying post, and insofar I'm sorry for the digression, but I find that little vagaries of behaviour of animals as well ourselves, can be interesting when unexpectedly akin to our own. If asked, I wonder how many people would say that birds have a sense of humour, recalling such behaviour to mind.

Pro 23:12 Apply thine heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge.13 Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die.14 Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell.

I was never really good at this, neither were my parents. My one and only spanking was in third grade. When my dad said this is going to hurt you more than it hurts me, I truly believed him. I just love my dad :•)

Proverbs 23:31-35

This is talking about fermented wine and how drunk people act, this is a clear warning not to drink it and in fact - to steer clear from. I wonder what the wine of Jesus' day really was? It's definitely not the wine we think of today.

In reading Proverbs 23, these verses stood out for me:

verses 1-7

1When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee:
2 And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite.
3 Be not desirous of his dainties: for they are deceitful meat.
4 Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom.
5 Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.
6 Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats:
7 For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.

This reminds me of Daniel and how he refrained from eating any of the king's food but ate the simplest of food, and still maintained his devotion and his faith in his God.

Daniel was very wise.

In reading Proverbs 23, verse 9 stood out for me:

"Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of thy words."

THIS IS SOOOOO PROFOUND.

God is telling us that there is a time and place for everything, just as it is written in Ecclesiastes. God is telling us to speak only when He is directing us to, and never ever to speak without wisdom and discernment, ALWAYS. God GIVES us discernment and the wisdom to speak when He prompts us to. What He is saying here, is if we INSIST on speaking to someone to engage them in our "own" strength, He will step back and let us, and the consequence is that we have NOT served God, but only ourselves, and that is always disastrous, and no one has been blessed or edified, for the Holy Spirit is not in it.

There are times when we just pray for someone, leaving them there, in God's hands.

Reminds me of this:

Hi,

Quickly after reading this, I thought about my position then.

I knew I had to stay for awhile as mockers, the position I was in with another, not you, has to be dealt with also it says in Proverbs lest they become wise in their own eyes, however I just left that person, and your words and your thoughts in time, gave me that correct direction, in his case.

Thanks.

LOVE,

...Mary., .... .

In reading Proverbs 23, this verse came to mind , and it is soooo true that our thoughts define us.....that is perhaps why David asked God to search his heart....

David was very wise.

Proverbs 23:

This verse stood out for me:

God SEES our hearts. He looks past all the pretense and show, and sees what's really in there.

NASB_Proverbs_23-7.jpg
1 Samuel 16:7

'But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart."'

In fact, there are a few such quotes here :
