Dake’s Annotated Reference Bible (Dake, 1961 [NT], 1963) KJV

Dake’s is the product of 43 years of study and is one of the few study Bibles that has more words in its helps than in the Bible. Most of Finis Jennings Dake’s materials are set in two columns that appear on each page beside the two columns of biblical text. His introduction claims 500,000 cross-references, 35,000 notes and comments, 8,000 outlines, and 2,000 illustrations. Many of these materials are lists of observations from the text, but much is interpretive, with emphasis on prophecy, healing, and the miraculous.

This work contains a great deal that is speculative and unorthodox, such as Dake’s belief in God’s "spirit body" with "bodily parts" that "goes from place to place" (pp. 96-97 [NT]), his strong teaching on racial segregation (e.g., pp. 148 [OT] and 159 [NT]), and his dogmatism on just about every subject he addresses. The Dake’s study Bible cannot be recommended to journal readers, charismatic or not.

New Geneva Study Bible (Nelson, 1994) NKJV

Consciously titled after the influential, Calvinistic Geneva Bible, this work is subtitled "Bringing the Light of the Reformation to Scripture." Fifty-five scholars under general editor R. C. Sproul contributed to its contents. Its informative notes are supplemented by nearly 100 theological essays, 61 maps, and 47 charts. Its theological orientation is Reformed and Calvinistic, but its materials recognize a range of understanding within that tradition. The introduction to Revelation, for example, summarizes the three major millennial perspectives without stating that any one position is the Reformed position. This new volume should be well received and widely circulated within the Reformed community.

goodtheology.com now has genuine leather editions of this for $51.95 including shipping.

Finis Dake's Bible is without question filled with questionable commentaries. It is not the reading material for young, immature Christians or undiscerning ministers. It has just enough truth to make his error seem plausible and convincing. He surely has convinced a host of modern day Pentecostals and Charismatics. No one would suggest that he is singularly responsible for the theological mess that floods these churches, but neither should he be excused for his part. Often when a figure such as Dake is dead, his teaching becomes even more powerful and accepted. Godly men and women must return to the simple Word of God and quit depending on popular figures to do their interpreting of truth. The Bible will interpret itself if you will:

My Bible study leader loves Dakes Bible.

Since she walks a Godly walk and talks a Godly talk I trust her.

I would never buy something based on someone else's opinion thougth. You should check it out for yourself if possible. Maybe a local library might have a copy for you to check out. I personally hope to get one someday.

And only the non-charasmatics think there is a charasmatic mess. But as far as me and my church are concened, we are not in a mess.

We have people getting saved, healed, and delivered on a weekly basis. We have people who are walking in victory instead of being overcome by the enemy. So no, we are not in a mess. We are a light to the community, just as I would expect that any of the churches are.

Here are some of Dake's footnotes regard God the Father

"He has a personal spirit body; shape; form; image and likeness of a man. He has bodily parts such as, back parts, heart, hands and fingers, mouth, lips and tongue, feet, eyes, ears, hair, head, face, arms, loins, and other bodily parts.

"He has bodily presence and goes from place to place in a body like all other persons.

"He has a voice; breath; and countenance. He wears clothes; eats; rests; dwells in a mansion and in a city located on a material planet called Heaven; sits on a throne; walks; rides; engages in other activities.

"He has a personal spirit with mind; intelligence; will; power; truth; faith and hope; righteousness; faithfulness; knowledge and wisdom; reason; discernment; immutability; and many other attributes." (Dakes Annotated reference Bible, Finis Jennings Dake, published by Dake Bible Sales, Inc., Lawrenceville, Georgia, New Testament, pp. 96-97)

Now is this sound Biblical Doctrine?

    Anthony,

Did you bother to also read the scripture ref Dake gave in regards to his comments? I don't have a Dake Bible but just looking briefly through a concordance produced these ref's that refer to things you say Dake is unbiblical about.

Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips ; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.
(Whole Chapter: Job 23 In context: Job 23:11-13)

Behold, the name of the LORD cometh from far, burning with his anger, and the burden thereof is heavy:his lips are full of indignation, and his tongue as a devouring fire:
(Whole Chapter: Isaiah 30 In context: Isaiah 30:26-28)

Give ear, O my people, to my law: incline your ears to the words of my mouth.
(Whole Chapter: Psalm 78 In context: Psalm 78:1-2)

For the eyes of the Lord. are over the righteous, and his ears. are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord. is against them that do evil.
(Whole Chapter: 1 Peter 3 In context: 1 Peter 3:11-13)

I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool:. his throne was like the fiery flame, and his wheels as burning fire.
(Whole Chapter: Daniel 7 In context: Daniel 7:8-10)

But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth: with the rod of , his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.
(Whole Chapter: Isaiah 11 In context: Isaiah 11:3-5)

And I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts: but my face shall not be seen.
(Whole Chapter: Exodus 33 In context: Exodus 33:22-23)

I will scatter them as with an east wind before the enemy; I will shew them the back, and not the face, in the day of their calamity.
(Whole Chapter: Jeremiah 18 In context: Jeremiah 18:16-18)

And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of Israel, who hath with his hands fulfilled that which he spake with his mouth to my father David, saying,
(Whole Chapter: 2 Chronicles 6 In context: 2 Chronicles 6:3-5)

And he shall spread forth his hands in the midst of them, as he that swimmeth spreadeth forth his hands to swim: and he shall bring down their pride together with the spoils of their hands.
(Whole Chapter: Isaiah 25 In context: Isaiah 25:10-12)

Arise, cry out in the night: in the beginning of the watches pour out thine heart like water before the face of the LORD: lift up thy hands toward him for the life of thy young children, that faint for hunger in the top of every street.

All these quotes are a type of personification of God.

    Jesus said:
    John 4:24
"God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth."

    God bless

Are we then we to make the assumption that God has Wings

    RU 2:12
May the LORD repay you for what you have done. May you be richly rewarded by the LORD, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge.

Bottomline is God the Father Spirit or Body? These comments are metaphors, figures of speech. We must read the bible with an understanding of the nature and context by which it was written. The bible is straight forward, there are no hidden messages, codes, or formulas.

Yes it does. Funny how we are adamat, when Mormons consider themselves Christian, yet we have people running around, who are in our own house, saying the same things and they go unchecked. What's up with that.

I'm saying that God being Spirit can at any given time can take any form He chooses. There are instances in the Bible where He took physical form.

Metaphor or not, when we need a hand, God gives it. When we need wings, we are covered by them. We are told continuously to seek His face. And when we see Him face to face we will know Him as He is.

I don't know what God looks like. But according to Him we are made in His image.

Those are metaphors. Do some research, search around, challenge what people have told you.

The only time God took physical form was through Jesus Christ. The passages that you referred to as Anthony stated were types of metaphors for God is a Spirit.

    God bless :)

    Anthony,

I am not necessarily dissagreeing with you, at least not on everything.

I do have some questions though. Do you believe we are made in God's image? If you do, what about us is in His image?

And if God said, that He is not like gods of stone who have ears that don't hear, and eyes that don't see, do you consider that to be a metophor too?

What about King Nebucchazzers son, who saw the "finger of God" writing on the wall?
