Not as the primary method, no. Only when the pooch has been helixed. And that applies to much of the US.

Not in some places. Take South Dakota. The governor there has quintupled down on doing nothing ever since this all began. And the Dakotas are #1 and #2 in new cases these days.

Lockdowns HAVE been used as a primary method. Equally as important as mask wearing.

Thankfully, some states have backed off now. The UK study is also important in this.

I believe some people are calling for lockdowns again.

Shut downs WERE the primary method along with mask wearing for many places. Thankfully a lot of places have backed off of that.

And we are seeing around the globe an increase of COVID despite mask wearing etc

The fact is we DO NOT KNOW for sure whether mask wearing is effective.

I'm not one of those who oppose mask wearing. I wear one. But I'm also not dogmatic about the issue or accusatory if those who don't wear them. Because we DON'T know.

You mean people actually live in South Dakota?

Fewer and fewer, but some.

“In South Dakota, we didn’t take a one-size-fits-all approach and the results have been incredible,” Gov. Kristi Noem told lawmakers in her state, which Johns Hopkins University says ranks second in the country for new cases per capita.

It is hard to believe a governor could be this irresponsible.

Another informal measure I look at is how many states have daily case numbers of 1,000 or more. ... So far today, it looks like 17 states meet that.
FL (10,000+) TX (10,000+) CA GA AZ TN LA SC AL NC OH IL VA OK MI MS PA

Today, more than half (26) of the states in the US had more than 1,000 cases. No state has had a 10,000+ day in a while I think, but now lots are getting at least 1,000.

TX IL WI MO FL CA NC MI TN OH IN GA PA UT NY VA MS SC AR OK AL KY MN CO AZ IA

Final tallies for the day are not quite in on Worldometers, but it looks like Texas may have just passed California to become #1 in total number of cases.

A couple weeks ago it was clear to me that Texas was going to be first to a million cases, but now TX will almost certainly be the first to 900,000 cases. I wouldn't call California safe by any means, but new cases have come down from their highs and held steady for a month. TX was similar but the steady part wasn't as low, and the last week has started to ramp back up again.

CA has sunk down to #31 in cases per capita, and TX has risen to #16. The Dakotas are #1 and #2.

A couple states aren't in yet, including Louisiana, but right now it's at 29 states with more than 1,000 new cases.

33 states each with more than 1,000 new cases today. And a new daily record of about 91,500 cases.

35 today over 1,000 with a new daily record of 118,000+ cases, beating yesterday's new daily record of 108,000+.

37 states today with more than 1,000 cases.
2 states today with more than 10,000 cases.
Total of 140,000+ total cases, roughly the same as yesterday, a new record for the nation.

Close to 1,500 deaths today, the highest since midsummer.

Internationally, our case rate is #8 among countries with more than a million citizens, ranking between Panama and Spain.

Our death rate also ranks #8, between Bolivia and Mexico.

40 states today with more than 1,000 cases each. There are only 50 states last I checked. It's just crazy that states like the Dakotas and Wyoming can have 1,000 new cases a day in states that don't even have a million citizens.

A new record daily total well over 150,000.

Another way to look at it: That's 3000 per state even if you include DC.

There's no good reason that COVID-19 is in America. Except Trump and his bad leadership.

That's a bit extreme. There's no way we would have been a New Zealand or an Iceland. But there's no reason we couldn't be in a similar position to Germany.

That is incorrect. The nation did not handle later mitigation correctly. However, we didn't really have any chance of keeping it out.

Study link

Methods: To determine if SARS-CoV-2 reactive antibodies werepresent in sera prior to the first identified case in the U.S. on January 19, 2020, residual archived samples from 7,389 routine blood donations collected by the American Red Cross from December 13, 2019 to January 17, 2020, from donors resident in nine states (California, Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, Michigan, Oregon, Rhode Island, Washington, and Wisconsin) were tested at CDC for anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies. Specimens reactive by pan-immunoglobulin (pan Ig) enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) against the full spike protein were tested by IgG and IgM ELISAs, microneutralization test, Ortho total Ig S1 ELISA, and receptor binding domain / Ace2 blocking activity assay. Results: Of the 7,389 samples, 106 were reactive by pan Ig. Of these 106 specimens, 90 were available for further testing. Eighty four of 90 had neutralizing activity, 1 had S1 binding activity, and 1 had receptor binding domain / Ace2 blocking activity >50%, suggesting the presence of anti-SARS-CoV-2-reactive antibodies. Donations with reactivity occurred in all nine states.

Fourth, even with a highly specific test, false positives may occur, particularly in low prevalence areas [29]. However, the number of reactive specimens identified in this study was higher than expected given the specificity of the pan Ig spike ELISA. Furthermore, additional evidence including microneutralization, detection of both SARS-CoV-2 specific IgG and IgM, and SARS-CoV-2 S1-specific Ig reactivity, make it very unlikely that all reactive specimens represent false positives. Further studies involving retrospective analyses of human specimens with molecular or serologic methods are necessary to further corroborate the present findings, which suggest the presence of specific antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 in the U.S. as early as mid-December 2019.

While they acknowledge some possibility of false positives given the cross reactivity with other coronaviruses, they note that it is unlikely all are false positives given specific reactivity.

In other words, it is likely the virus was around in Mid December before we were even informed of its existence.

There was reactivity in 9 states in samples from mid-December to early January.

This was before the sequencing of the virus was published, and therefore before tests could be created. And it was before The USA, Australia or others could institute their travel restrictions, which were not initially recommended anyway.

This is on top of the data that we had from genetic tests which indicated early community spread matching the first known case, also before anyone had a test.
