Deaths are still flat lined, having never even lifted off the ground in the graph, and recoveries have overtaken active cases.

Thus far as of today, only 1.59% of Americans have even contracted the virus, and 0.05% of the population has died. 166,192 deaths out of the 5,251,446 is a rate of 3.16%.
Those are daily deaths. Of course the line doesn't move on a linear scale of that size. Even if a million people died each weak it would hardly be visible as a bump when you display the data like that.

Obviously it's kind of hard to compare the long-term effect of the current pandemic when we don't know what the full outcome is.

In terms of prognostications, I don't see any reason to think it will be as bad as something as the Black Death. Yes, there will be economic fall-out, possibly conflicts arising from that, possibly famines from shortages, etc. But I don't see any reason to think that such events could wipe out 20% of the human population.

The human species is remarkably resilient and adaptable. In the long run, this is just a bump in the road.

Personally, I'd be a lot more concerned about the long-term effects of climate change than I would about the long-term term effects of this pandemic.

Also, when you compare general metrics about health and well-being of modern humans/society, we are a lot better off than we were in days past. Just comparing things like infant mortality rates and those used to be a lot worse. There was a time when losing a child was not all that uncommon compared to today (3rd world countries notwithstanding).
I thought I would revisit this post and bring it forward.

In the last two weeks, our confirmed cases doubled from 50,000 to 100,000. Hospitalizations for COVID-19 are up, and critical care services such as ventilators are at a record high use. The positivity rate in testing is between 25 percent to 30 percent – quadruple the 5 percent that experts recommend for making informed decisions about reopening. Today, Arizona has the highest infection rate per capita than any other state in the country – including New York during its April peak.
Confirmed cases in Arizona as of yesterday was 207,000 cases, it has doubled again.

However, they don' have the highest infection rate anymore, they have been surpassed by both Florida and Louisiana.

Of course numbers change over time...believe you're quoting information from a couple of months back.

Some states are ending virtually all social distancing rules.

The CBS video only mentioned Nebraska.

States who don't respect this virus will regret that choice. The virus is opportunistic....

Excess deaths — Excess deaths are considered deaths that are related to Covid19 increase the death toll to 50% higher.

1. Could be due to lack of testing

2. Or people afraid to go to the hospital

3. Or people who died due to the lockdown.

It was often claimed that there were going to be more suicides because of people being alone. That was used as an argument against lockdowns. Got any data on that?

Trump declares the schools will be open this Fall....and he plans to pressure governors to make it happen....
Just a quick update -- NYC has decided to delay the reopening of public schools from Sept 21 to Oct 1. This is because way too many schools are not able to meet a number of the criteria set.

In addition to this students have the option for in class learning or remote learning. A few weeks ago we had about 140 out of 400 choosing remote, that number is up to 260 as of Friday. Also, our school has 2 teachers who have already tested positive for Coronavirus, we now have 7 teachers who are quarantining, if one more teacher tests positive the entire school will be put into quarantine delaying the opening to the 2nd week of October.

Coronavirus cases set new single-day records in six U.S. states and worldwide
Gov. Mike DeWine of Ohio said, "We're sick of wearing masks, we're sick of all of this, and I get it, but we've got to hang in there for our kids. We've got to hang in there for ourselves."

The daily rise in coronavirus cases set new records in six U.S. statesand worldwide.

Missouri, Montana, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma and West Virginia all had record single-day increases in cases on Friday, according to NBC News' tally.

The World Health Organization meanwhile announced that 350,766 new infections were reported Friday, surpassing by nearly 12,000 a record set earlier in the week. The new cases include more than 109,000 from Europe alone.

And there is this study that talks about the detriments of lockdowns.

Let's face it people, masks are being required everywhere pretty much as well as social distancing. Yet we are still seeing increases to the infection. We are a LONG way away from the ole flatten the curve 15 day or whatever scenario.

Let's just let this thing run its course, let's keep wearing masks and social distancing, but let's stop the fear. We are not going to stop it, and we are hardly slowing it down.

Let's mitigate for those who are vulnerable, keep everything open and let's ride this out. The world will be better off in the long run.

Oh and let's use all the great things that were done for our president as part of the general treatment plans. And let's keep working on a vaccine.

Not as the primary method, no. Only when the pooch has been helixed. And that applies to much of the US.

Not in some places. Take South Dakota. The governor there has quintupled down on doing nothing ever since this all began. And the Dakotas are #1 and #2 in new cases these days.

You mean people actually live in South Dakota?
