anybody here read any of Cormac McCarthy's novels? "The Road" is Oprah's new pick of the month.

I have.

He is the greatest American novelist since Melville and Faulkner.

I consider him to be the greatest novelist the world has ever seen.

I read "All the Pretty Horses" and that was more than enough for me.

i'd say horses is his most "civilized" novel, if you found it disturbing, you probably wouldn't want to read his others. i love mccarthy's work, but i do realize it isn't for everybody.

it's strange, but tho Blood Meridian is a very brutal and non-forgiving story, i find it very exhilerating, others have told me it depressed them, but it's never affected me that way. but i am subject to hate brutal fiction, i was badly disturbed by american psycho, years ago, and there have been others. but something in BM really exalts me, i think it's simply the incredible granduer of the prose.
