Pierogis bring back family memories for Msgr. Thomas Orsulak of Reading, Pennsylvania. “My Slovak grandmother used to make them from scratch,” he said. “It is like comfort food for us.”

Pierogis for Beginners

As Msgr. Orsulak explained, he is not a cook, but pierogis were popular family food when he was growing up. In this competition, he used already-made pierogis.

Serves maybe 3 to 4

  • One dozen frozen pierogis
  • 4 ounces butter
  • 1 onion, peeled and chopped
Place the pierogis in boiling water. Meanwhile, heat the butter in a large skillet, and sauté the onion. When the pierogis float to the top, strain them and drain well. Place them in a deep bowl and top them with the butter and chopped onions. Enjoy.
