We are getting near the conker season. The horse chestnut tree will soon be shedding it's green packed balls containing those hardy conkers that we loved playing with as children! Do you remember competing with others in the conker fights?

When I lived in Exeter, we had a woodland walk that led from the house into the university's gardens. This time of year, there were always hundreds of conkers lying over the ground. I remember playing games with conkers but I never seemed to do very well! We don't seem to see as many of them these days.

This was a walk I did last autumn through a park a bit closer in Willenhall.

In the school playground where we played with conkers on strings. Each conker had a number, according to how many conquests were made. I very rarely got to a 'sixer!'

From what I remember, I think we just made the rules as we went along! :)

Ah the days before health and safty banned fun activities.

There used to be great arguments over the based way to strengthen/preserve a conker, was 'pickling' better than baking?
Home owners with or near 'conker' trees dreaded the barrage of sticks hurled into the tree, with no thought of where that stick might go, in an attempt to knock the conkers down.

We need to visit our cabin in Wales to turn the heating on for the winter.
When we are there we collect conkers fron the horse chestnut trees that are all along the path at the side of the holiday village.
My daughter says that they deter spiders in the house, but I am not sure how ;)
