I've not come across reception before either. I suppose it does make sense if people are coming from another denomination which practices confirmation.

But nobody else has mentioned that here; is episcopal reception not so common in other places?

In my part of TEC, it's more common than confirmation for our adults. As long as they made some sort of mature public commitment in their previous denomination, we will have them received. We no longer try to figure out which denominations' confirmation processes "count" to decide between confirmation and reception (i.e. worrying about apostolic succession and the like).
