Matt 13:24 Another parable He put forth to them, saying: "The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field; 25 but while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat and went his way. 26 But when the grain had sprouted and produced a crop, then the tares also appeared. 27 So the servants of the owner came and said to him, 'Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have tares?' 28 He said to them, 'An enemy has done this.' The servants said to him, 'Do you want us then to go and gather them up?' 29 But he said, 'No, lest while you gather up the tares you also uproot the wheat with them. 30 Let both grow together until the harvest, and at the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, "First gather together the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them, but gather the wheat into my barn."'" NKJV

Matthew 13: 24-30 Do not confuse the parable of tares and wheat with the dragnet parable. The tares were sown by Satan. The tares never were in the kingdom. At the end of the age when all kingdoms in the world become God's kingdom then, and only then, they were in God's kingdom. The tares claimed to be Christian for reasons other than believing in Jesus as their savior. They entered for monetary reasons, for political power or some other worldly reason. Again the tares never were saved because Satan planted them.

Matt 13:47 "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a dragnet that was cast into the sea and gathered some of every kind, 48 which, when it was full, they drew to shore; and they sat down and gathered the good into vessels, but threw the bad away. 49 So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come forth, separate the wicked from among the just, 50 and cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth." NKJV

Every fish, good or bad, was caught by the net. John 21: 6 is an example of the dragnet used by Peter, James and John. The net is thrown out then drug back into the boat. The net is cast out and catches whatever fish happens to be under it. Jesus said that both good and bad were caught. Both the good and bad were in the kingdom. Both were saved. The good were kept and the bad thrown in the fire. Both kinds of fish were together in the net, the kingdom of God.

How are the tares selected?

Do the angels line up everybody and point at every tare, or is there a self-selection mechanism? For example, before the flood came everyone could walk onto Noah's Ark. Everyone that died selected not to get on the Ark.

There is also the parable of the pearl of great price. There are many thousands of pearls that are not symmetrical spheres, nor of proper size. People will not buy them, even if they are cheap. If someone can properly appraise and sell pearls, one might be doing a pearl deal. A man would spend nothing on all these other common pearls, but if he sees the very best at a discounted price, he might buy it. God will support the best, for they will inspire others to do good.

When Christ comes back to judge/trample every foe under his feet, (every believer and sinner will be judged), the angels do the reaping and Christ does the dividing. Sheep/wheat to the right, goats tares to the left, etc, etc

that's the way i understand Christ's return.

John 3: 5 Jesus said that one must be born again to enter the kingdom of God. Therefore, both the bad and the good fish were born again. Yet, the good were gathered into vessels to be kept in the kingdom. The bad fish were gathered and cast into the furnace of fire.

The harvesting of grain and gathering the fish is more analogous to the white throne judgement. After each parable the good are given eternal life and the bad eternal punishment.

Dan 12:1 "At that time Michael shall stand up,
The great prince who stands watch over the sons of your people;
And there shall be a time of trouble,
Such as never was since there was a nation,
Even to that time.
And at that time your people shall be delivered,
Every one who is found written in the book.
2 And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake,
Some to everlasting life,
Some to shame and everlasting contempt.

3 Those who are wise shall shine
Like the brightness of the firmament,
And those who turn many to righteousness
Like the stars forever and ever. NKJV

God told Daniel in verse 2 that “many” of those who sleep in the dust shall awake. Some of those will awake to eternal life. Because many and not all will awake this must be the rapture of the church. Revelation 20: 11-15 At the white throne all the dead will be present. The rapture happened 1000 years prior when many of the dead were awakened. The dragnet being drawn ashore corresponds to the time in Daniel when many were awakened. Romans 11: 25-26 The net was full when the fullness of the gentiles entered the net. At that time, as God told Daniel, his people will be delivered. As Paul said all Israel will be saved. All true Israel that is.
