Can a layperson read this, swapping out the priestly parts as usual?

I think so, yes. plus there is the Akathist to St Varus, who intercedes for the departed heterodox.

I think there is a moleben for the departed, canons and akathists for the departed too
Seems like I remember it was a series of moleben services my monk friend promised to do for my Nouna when she reposed?

could be, the whole point of the moleben is intercession for whatever/whoever the moleben is for
