Hi all,

Just letting members know that I've been busy coding up a new system where members can easily report staff and appeal any warnings or moderator actions.

The whole system will be automated. Appeals will automatically go to the staff member's senior team member, and go through the proper channels.

This system will take many days to finish - at the earliest it will be up this weekend. But it may not be ready by then.

Thank you all for being patient while this system of accountability and procedural fairness is being set up.

I wake up, work on CF, then go to work. At work, I check CF, and work on things I can work on. I come home, work on CF, have dinner, work on CF, do some exercises, work on CF, then sleep. :) That's the story of my life.

I am taking a break from CF tonight though - I've got to do a video presentation for Father's Day coming up.

It's okay, he set up an automated system where she can appeal his decision to work on the computer. :p

Man... Next time I have a job, I need to send in some money or something. Erwin is carrying wayyyy too much of the weight of this site.

Not to be the voice of doom or anything, but I don't believe there is any such thing as a perfect appeals system that is going to make these forums kind and gentle. The best systems I have seen involve short term bans for people with repeat offenses and site bans for areas that seem particularly troublesome. The fact is though, given the number of ways people can get back to any given site, and the pure number of people that there are, some of the most effective moderating I have ever seen is simply the sort of self moderation that comes from different people hasing it out on their own, with perhaps some hard and fast rules on vulgarity.

As the rules have evolved, I have not seen any appreciable improvement inthe heat and tension of the forums, rather I have seen resentment on the part of people on all sides of various arguments that they are being singled out. And I daresay they are all probably right. That's the whole reason many nations have gone to the "free speach" model we all are so familiar with.

Still... obviously we will do whatever we will do here. At some point I am resigned that I may simply not be able to function here. In fact, my experiences here help me understand more fully precisely why there are schisms and denominations and so forth. The Bible has specific verses describing how to do church discipline, but they revolve around the concept of shared understanding, and when that understanding breaks down, people must simply make the decision as to which group of leaders they are going to follow.

Sad? Maybe to some. I don't know. But that's the reality. The entire purpose of a discussion forum is as a place to have verbal discussion, which between human beings is going to result from time to time in conflict. Aside from vulgarity, what really should be the rule? People eventualy wear themselves out anyhow, and people come and go...

It's just natural.

Staff Team Appeals system - still not finished.

Hi all,

My apologies - after 4 hours coding yesterday and 4 hours coding today, it's still not finished. :(

I've got the Staff Team backend all up and running - the automated Appeals process is a bit more complicated.

I have to leave to go to church for a prayer meeting and music practice - this will have to wait - I hope to finish this during the coming week sometime.

Thanks for your patience.
