Hello all,

I don't go to church at the moment and I wanted to share my reasons why. Maybe someone out there has some helpful feedback that they can give me on their perspective on things.

1. I often find Pastors yelling at the top of the voices trying to tell me a message. I dislike being yelled at.

2. People speaking in tongues! This one is bound to step on someones toes! I don't agree with any one who thinks that you can speak in a unknown tongue "without interpretation". If there is a interpretation it doesn't necessarily mean that it is coming from God so "you need some tools to test it"! I also don't believe that tongues is gibberish! It is a known human language like Russian, or German or anything like. God would not give someone a gift of speaking in gibberish. Bible Gateway passage: 1 Corinthians 14:33 - King James Version

3. Emotionalism! I have difficulty sitting in churches that seem to use emotionalism as a tool to bring me into submission. I will only submit to God and I don't submit to a Church or a person i.e Pastor! There will be some of you who say that we come under a covering from the Church! That is something I don't agree with either. All I need is the blood of Christ to cover me! i don't need no Pastor, or so called Prophets! Please don't read that statement out of context! Am talking about Pastors and Prophets that are not really following the teachings of Christ but using the word of god to make a profit. I also have problems with the church using commercialism and the idea of promoting 'beauty' in a way to attract people to a product. Just like advertisements do!

4. Music! This is a tough one for me! Music is either too ... Hillsong or too .. Traditional and has Hymns that I just can't get into. Most the time the best worship for me is what you might call scripture song. I like worship that concentrates on using scripture in a way to praise God. i.e stuff like this Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs - ALL FREE - Scripture Songs - Bible Songs - Christian MP3 Music

5. Pop Psychology! I don't like going to church to hear a motivational sermon, or to hear about some psychological wisdom. I go to church to hear Gods word. If I wanted to hear Pop Psychology I would listen to a motivational speaker. I think there is a place for everything. But I don't agree that Pop psychology is something that should be mixed with the word of God. I also felt that occasionally that the church was using psychology against me in order to control me in some fashion.

6. The Honey moon period. I have been to many churches and one thing that you notice after a while something I call the Honey mood period. Your new to the church so people are friendly they come over say hello, pretend to be your best friend! Say that they will invite you over for a BBQ or something like that. It never happens! After being in a Church for more than 3 months your just another piece of furniture! Yes people will say hello but that's it! No one seems interesting in friendship, in doing things outside of the church, and if you are invited out is usually for a coffee or something like that. I realize that people are just people even in your a Christian. We all have busy lives! Some have families so they need to make priorities about what needs to be done first. Your family or your personal problems are going to come first before any new christian to the church

7. Mental health is a demonic issue. Now first of all I would like to say that I do believe that demons can influence us however NOT EVERY THING IS DEMONIC! Just because you have been diagnosed with a mental health issue that does not mean that you have some kind of demon. I have many close family members who have mental health issues ranging from, schizophrenia, to bipolar. There are many, many reasons why you may have a mental health issue i.e. Environmental factors ,some have made claims that vaccines are linked to autism for example.

8. The power of prayer. This is one that many of you will disagree with me on! I don't believe in miracles. In the church! I believe that if God were to heal someone he would heal them in private , in their personal time with him. Not in a church! P.s my definition of a miracle is for someone to be cured from a health issue that could not be cured by the power of suggestion!

9. Sermons. I can't stand it when a pastor quotes one verse and talks, talks and talks. The more he talks the more he isn't talking about biblical theology. I think that sermons should be filled with more biblical references. The rule should be reading the bible IN CONTEXT! This means that you read the bible chapter and verse by verse. You don't skip from one book of the bible. I bugs me big time when a pastor reads one bible verse out of context and joins it with a other book of the bible to match his ideology!

Maybe an Episcopal or ELCA Lutheran church would meet your needs. All churches are different but they tend to be less yelly and more intellectual.

I agree with everything you said, Geoffrey. I would go back to church except for mental health issues and if its like any of the above. Speaking of, I don't like the idea of demons being in control of my thoughts or mental health issues either. If demons were responsible then medication wouldn't work, because medication treats the flesh and not the spirit, and I believe all my thoughts are my own.

Hi. I pretty much agree and don't go to church either (although I would if someone invited me and it was a feasible time and distance so my husband wouldn't be upset) except number 2, not all churches have speaking in tongues and number 8 I totally believe in the power of prayer. I always experience really powerful outcomes from corporate prayer requests (which is why I rarely request them!). I have heard so many miracle stories of healing and answered prayer that I can't ignore it even though I am all for rational thinking and science when it comes to medicine. There are some things that medicine can't cure...that is to say there are no medicines for them.
My last prayer request has brought me so much healing there is no way I could have gotten this far without divine intervention. Didn't happen in a church though so I guess I do agree with you on that unless this forum and other Christian gathering places online are churches? Is this a church? Hmm.

I tried a Lutheran Church. They were saying repetitive prayers just like the catholics do

Yes I agree and the are of mental health and spirituality is a complex one. I do believe that demons can communicate with people but often they don't need to do that . Life is full of complex issues that messes up peoples minds. TV programs that promote a worldly life style for example. Christians who believe in God but are involved in churches full of false teachers etc. Their is a whole range of reason why there is so much problems with healing the mental health within a person. I like how you mentioned medication that treats the flesh.

1. No not all churches speak in tongues but many of them do, the only way to avoid this would be to go to either a church of england, Seventh day adventist or a baptist church. I have tried these churches. Two of these churches have theology problems and the other is into occultism of a sort.

2. Corporate prayer! Other Christians always say this type of thing to me about the power of prayer. You would have to walk a mile in my shoes before you understood the difficulty that I have in sharing that kind of faith in prayer. I wish I did share that kind of faith in prayer. But my experience is people have to suffer with all kinds of things. What if you had prayed for 20 years for some one close to you with mental health issues and you didn't see them healed would that shrink your faith? Well I have! Just because Jesus healed some people that doesn't mean that all Christians can be healed in the same manner.

That is quite an introduction! I think you meant "mental unwellness" issues... You have some genuine complaints, for sure, about current church worship time. I used to say it would be great if the church could worship like the orthodox Presbyterians (reverence, some unity in Apostle's creed recitation, no yelling) and the passion of a Baptist church. :D But I've been to many different denominations and currently have none to attend myself.

Hopefully you will find the fellowship you need here, for the time being. You might check out my friend's music to help calm your soul and worship God ... Marty Goetz such as

Thank you for the link! I think I've seen him before many years ago and liked him but didn't know his name. Isn't that interesting how God works.
