Church of Canada may disappear by 2040, says new report

(RNS) — A “wake-up call.”

That’s what Archbishop Linda Nicholls, primate of the Anglican Church of Canada, called a new report showing there may be no members left in the mainline Canadian denomination in 20 years.

The report, which was commissioned by the church, was delivered to the Council of General Synod meeting November 7-9 in Mississauga, Ontario.

“Projections from our data indicate that there will be no members, attenders or givers in the Anglican Church of Canada by approximately 2040,” said the Rev. Neil Elliot, an Anglican priest in Trail, British Columbia, who authored the report.

Elliot based his prediction on church statistics from 1961 to 2001, subscriber data to the “Anglican Journal,” the church’s official publication, and data from his own survey of the number of people on parish rolls, average Sunday attendance and regular identifiable givers across Canada.

“For five different methodologies to give the same result is a very, very powerful statistical confirmation which we really, really have to take seriously and we can’t dismiss lightly,” he told church leaders during the synod.

Membership in the Anglican Church fell from a high of 1.3 million in 1961 in membership to 357,123 in 2017, said Elliot.

The new statistics will test the “perseverance, endurance, (and) creativity of the church, Nicholls said during the synod.

At the same time, she added, “we do not face our challenges alone.” Instead, church members can rely on a sense of community and “promise of God’s grace.”

his article is about the Anglican Church of Canada. Not to be confused with the United Church of Canada which we discussed some time ago as having an atheist pastor:

Is anyone surprised by this? Many churches have become so like the world that they are just a Sunday morning social group. In the persecuted nations, the church is growing. In those places, there is a price to pay for being a Christian. What calls itself "church" is not necessarily what God sees as the church. The church is those who are born again, not those who choose to visit every now and again. Organised, religious Christianity is finished. Only the real church will survive in the last days. And that is good news, not bad.

I don't know about today, but I would be leery to join a church started by king of England who wanted to divorce his wife with the Pope's blessing. The Pope refused so he began his own church.
I was forced to attend from the age of 10 until I was 13. Eternity to me was the Anglican church service.

I think organized religious Christianity will flourish. However, it will be part of the Mother of All Harlots, some kind of global religion with a pretense of worshiping God, but worshiping self and Satan instead.

It's been in partnership with the secular powers for 1700 years so nothing new there.

To a lesser extent, this trend will most likely impact some denominations in the U.S. and Europe also in the coming years.
It was never that strong in Canada, but there will be a lot of small cool stone buildings up for sale.

Been a dead organization for a long time, indeed. And Elizabeth is the head of the organization. Oh joy.

I see Judaism, Islam and Christianism (my made up word) merging to form the Antichrist world religion. It's already starting with Imams reading the Koran in church meetings. There is "Chrislam" in Africa. All that needs to happen is that the Jews get on board. Now that Saudi Arabia and other Muslim countries are getting friendly with Israel, that is not as far fetched as it seemed not so long ago. China is an example of the how the state can tolerate religion, as long as the state controls it. The Russian Orthodox church survived quite well under communism. All it had to do was toe the party line.
