Christ's Eyes In Icons

The majority of Christ icons have him looking directly at us. But I noticed the eyes of Christ Pantocrator on the ceiling of a church were looking off to his left. I've also seen icons where He seems to be looking to his right, as in this one:

What's the significance of which way Christ is portrayed as looking?

I heard once that it's to show Christ in mystical contemplation.

but I will definitely defer to someone more knowledgeable.
