Christians Rebuke John Piper for Calling Trump’s Re-Election Win an ‘Evil’

John Piper received backlash on social media this week after remarking that President-elect Donald Trump's victory was an "evil."

"Presidential election results," Piper wrote on Wednesday. "Having delivered us from one evil, God now tests us with another."

He added a reference to Deuteronomy 13:3: "The Lord your God is testing you, to know whether you love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul."

While Piper’s stern opposition to Trump is notable among evangelicals, he has been equally opposed to the candidates against whom Trump has faced off in the last three election cycles.
In 2020, Piper said in reference to the race between Joe Biden and Donald Trump that his calling as a pastor would be “contradicted by supporting either pathway to cultural corruption and eternal ruin.”
“When I consider the remote possibility that I might do any good by endorsing the devastation already evident in the two choices before me,” he added, “I am loath to undermine my calling (and the church’s mission) to stand for Christ-exalting faith and hope and love.”

“At times, it happens in a fallen world that a vote for any proposed candidate is so offensive, so morally compromised, so misleading,” Piper said in 2023, “that it may be a matter of greater integrity, more faithful obedience to Christ, and a clearer witness to truth if we do not vote for any of the proposed candidates.”

Piper’s remarks on Wednesday raised the ire of a number of Trump supporters, many of whom are Christian leaders and influencers.
One may disagree about who of the two candidates (Trump or Harris) was the lesser evil, but Christians should agree that both are evils.

Harris is a greater evil in respect of moral values (but you cannot trust that Trump will stay pro-life, given his many turns on that matter), Trump is a greater evil as a danger for democracy (he openly opposes the system of check & balance, if he succeeds, the USA will become like Hungary, or even worse).

The forced resignation of Gaetz gives hope that the GOP will resist the attempt to wipe out the Dems by brute »legal« force.

I've said similar things. (If you keep choosing between the lesser of two evils, eventually you will be faced with a great evil from which there is no escape)

I think it's this kind of thing he might be speaking against, the decaying of the system in general. Regardless of who was elected he probably would have said the same thing.

I like John Piper & often listen to his sermons, especially his older ones from the 90s & early 2000s
However, knowing God is sovereign, and He does His will among men, and sets up one and puts down another according to the prophet Daniel, Trump is where he's supposed to be.
Likewise, back in 2020 after all the madness & anarchy of that year, God gave the people what they wanted, and how did that turn out for them?
As for the character argument, when it comes to politicians, I think their leadership qualities come first, and as far as character, we are told to pray for them.
And Trump DOES support Biblical values, which is very important. Or the other choice was antichrist values across the board...

If Jesus Christ teaches to help the poor. And the Jesus of Trump does the opposite, would this be an example of an antichrist?

If Jesus Christ teaches one who lives by the sword, dies by the sword. And the Jesus of Trump is a gun merchant, would this be an example of an antichrist?

Perhaps the other party is also antichrist in it's values, but Piper's point was both were evil. Should we then not be vigilant? Should we allow ourselves to be fooled?

This is the problem with Christians who get involve in politics.

Piper is mistaken about President Trump and God's testing. Christians face tests and confront evil daily. The election result in America does not change that we are fighting "against the rulers, authorities, powers of this dark world, and spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms".

Equally, Christians who believe that electing President Trump will safeguard their interests and promote Christian values in American society are mistaken. Jesus Christ is the sole refuge and protector for Christians, not elected politicians. It is only through preaching the gospel that we can expand the “kingdom of God” in society, not by electing politicians.

I don't know his personal walk with Christ if he even has one.
I'm also the one who said months ago there was too much Trump idolatry going on, where some folk think he's the answer to every problem America has.
I also have often said that judgment fell on America in 2 forms while he was in office, first Covid, then the riots of 2020.
However, of the choice of the 2 candidates, I'd choose the one who is against butchering babies in the womb, against sodomite marriages, and against all the transgender junk being crammed down our kids throats. And he wants to end a war, not carry it on and on as the Biden admin has.
And who knows, he could make a wrong move and get us nuked. But so could've Harris. And so can Biden in the month left.
Don't think God has forgotten the sins of Manasseh & the sins of Sodom & the sins of Babylon America has flaunted in everyone's face for about 60 years.
We are to pray for the leaders, whoever they are. And I know Trumps got pride and a past with women. Let us pray he humble himself before the Mighty God of heaven, and seek wisdom as did Solomon, for He will surely need it.

I don't really see anything wrong with what you've said.

Just pointing at the two evils. People presenting themselves as Christians should not be outraged when they are told something they have chosen is is evil. If Christians will not even consider repenting, why will anyone else?

Hello Helmut! Good to meet you. What you are saying may well be true. But in life there sometimes is a binary choice. It would be good if there was a third choice, sometimes there isn't. Perhaps many American brothers and sisters looked at Trump and Harris, in a choice between them from a Christian perspective Trump was perhaps the better. Harris was in favour of abortion and trans. It would be hard to see how a practising Christian could support a pro-abortion candidate. To keep Harris out you had to vote Trump. There wasn't another way.

Trump does have a Christian heritage, his great-aunts were well known blind intercessors in the Islands of Scotland.

God Bless You :)

Biological heritage isn't really that important since being a Christian is about being born again.

Samuel is a great example of the family playing temple but not picking up the faith.

Hello! Good to meet you. On the other hand there are biblical examples where a Godly heritage does seem to do some good:

2 Timothy 1:5 remembering the sincere faith in you, which lived first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am convinced that is in you also.

God Bless You :)

Trump will continue the sins of Sodom:

Ez 16: 49 ‘ “Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy. 50 They were haughty and did detestable things before me. Therefore I did away with them as you have seen.

Or do you think that Trump will help the USA and/or its government to help the poor, not to be arrogant, be modest in consumption of the world's resources? I suppose he will promote all the sins of Sodom, enumerated in that verse.

Good to know.
However, of the choice of the 2 candidates, I'd choose the one who is against … against sodomite marriages
According to Jude v.7, sodomitic sexuality was the trial of sex with angels. Have you any examples that Trump has said anything about marriages with angels?

Or did some English tranlations mislead you? In the original language, the lust of Sodom is specified as a desire o foreign flesh, i.e. flesh of another kind, and Gen 19 shows this other kind was angels. Another instance of that sin (angels marrying women, Gen 5) is alluded to in verse 6!.

In my language (German) the word Sodomie means bestiality (sex with animals), which is closer to the biblical terminology than the English word »sodomy«.

Ant the sin of Sodom is even something quite different:

Ez 16:49 Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy. 50 They were haughty and did detestable things before me. Therefore I did away with them as you have seen.

It seems it is Trump who commits or even propagates the sins of Sodom! Perhaps you should re-evaluate the comparison of the two candidates.

And to avoid a misunderstanding: I know that gay sex is sin. But this is not mentioned in connection with Sodom in the Bible.
And he wants to end a war, not carry it on and on as the Biden admin has.
A war ends technically with negotiation, but on a deeper level there are three possibilities:
1+2: One side is defeated and accepts the terms of the other side.
3: Both are exhausted and want peace, so they find a deal.

Russia is not ready for the third option, Ukraine has no power to win the war, so this war can, by now, only end with a Russian victory, acknowledged in a »deal«.

We know from history what happens if a dictator like Putin experience the weakness of the counterparts: In 1938 Chamberlain, trying to avoid a war, went to Munich and made a deal with Hitler. Hitler went on, and even when war started, the west (UK and France) only fought a limited »phony war«, so Hitler attacked in 1940, and could them be stopped only in a much bigger war.

Putin will not go into a nuclear war, he has other means to reach his aims: He tries to alienate the USA from her allies (using Trump, and right-wing European parties, as instruments to alienate NATO from the USA), he has started a »hybrid« warfare, makes »covert« operations (remember the Crimea 2014?), …

The earlier Putin is stopped, the better.
And who knows, he could make a wrong move and get us nuked.
Trump, with his »tactic«» of being alternatively extreme friendly and extreme aggressive, could also be nuked. But I think that Putin is too rational to start a nuclear war. He knows that threats will help him, and he certainly knows that starting a nuclear war against a nuclear power will get nothing. Maybe he will in some future risc a nuclear war with France (hoping that USA and UK will stand aside) …
Don't think God has forgotten the sins of Manasseh & the sins of Sodom & the sins of Babylon
  • Sin of Manasseh: idolatry. NT tells thet6 greed is idolatry, ans MAGA is a term that promoted greed.
  • Sin of Manesseh (2): Offering children in state of emergency (2.Ki 21:6, cf. 2.Ki 3:27). One may compare this to abortion - but also to the way the (much exaggerated) »emergency situation« at the US borders were handled …
  • Sins of Sodom: pride, arrogance, no concern for social problems of the needy - again, this points to Trump (and conservatives in general)
  • Sins of Babylon: Idolatry, veneration of sun and stars, war crimes … hmmm.
You see: Your evaluation is one-sided. Christians are not unanimously which of the candidates was the lesser evil.
America has flaunted in everyone's face for about 60 years.
Oh, for longer time. Some CIA coups are older than 60 years. The term »ugly American« was coined in the 1950's …
We are to pray for the leaders, whoever they are. And I know Trumps got pride and a past with women. Let us pray he humble himself before the Mighty God of heaven, and seek wisdom as did Solomon, for He will surely need it.
Solomon is no good example, if you consider how he ended. He got wisdom, but he lacked obedience.

Perhaps many American brothers and sisters looked at Trump and Harris, in a choice between them from a Christian perspective Trump was perhaps the better.
There is no uniform »christian perspective«.

When I was young I wondered as I read about African churches allowing polygamy, not as an ideal, but as something that could be tolerated given the circumstances. Only years later I read more and could understand their motives.

Our judgement will always be imperfect, and influenced by our culture. Take the example of a young widow who decides not to marry an attractive young man, but rather chose a wealthy man that tradition says she should take, and who would give her and her mother-in-law a safe existence. Choosing tradition instead of love? Can this be called virtue? Yes, it can (Ruth 3:10)!

Or take Lot, which is called righteous - he preferred to offer the innocence of his daughters in order to keep hospitality (Gen 19:8) - he definitely had another values system than we have (and note that hospitality is highlighted in the NT, e.g. Heb 13:2).

We tend to diminish the sins we are acquainted with, and to exaggerate sins that are alien to us. Therefore, our judgement is always biased and not just the (only) Christian view.
Harris was in favour of abortion and trans. It would be hard to see how a practising Christian could support a pro-abortion candidate.
Trump promotes the sins of Sodom (no, I don't mean sodomy, I mean what the Bible calls so). It would be hard to see how a practising Christian could support a sodom-sinning (to avoid the misleading sodomize) candidate. You see my point?
Trump does have a Christian heritage, his great-aunts were well known blind intercessors in the Islands of Scotland.
Maybe. But his grandfather (bar-keeper in Alaska, in the wild times of gold rush) and his father (racist, even Nazi sympathizer) were more important than these great-aunts he never met.

EDIT: corrected typos and other little errors

Yes, Sodoms sin was pride & arrogance, among other things. But homosexuality was one of their many sins.
Note Genesis 19:9,
"And they said, Stand back. And they said again, This one fellow came in to sojourn, and he will needs be a judge: now will we deal worse with thee, than with them. And they pressed sore upon the man, even Lot, and came near to break the door."

First there is no indication they knew the angels were angels, but men. And here it's obvious they wanted to do same with Lot, who was a man.
Roman's 1 is also very clear that homosexuality is a sin that brings the wrath of God, and in fact is a part of the judgment, as God gives them up to these sins.

As for sins of Manasseh, America is quite guilty of all form of idolatry, including covetousness. Las Vegas is basically a city temple of idolatry. Hollywood also, human idols.
Jerusalem was also filled with blood. Here you have abortion, you have mass shootings, gang violence , and all kind of heinous murders, including child murders.

May Jesus return soon! Come, LORD Jesus!

"And they said, Stand back. And they said again, This one fellow came in to sojourn, and he will needs be a judge: now will we deal worse with thee, than with them. And they pressed sore upon the man, even Lot, and came near to break the door."
This was, as I pointed out, a break of hospitality. This incident is alluded to in Jud V.7, and there the homosexual aspect is not mentioned.
First there is no indication they knew the angels were angels, but men.
This seems to be irrelevant to Judas.
Roman's 1 is also very clear that homosexuality is a sin that brings the wrath of God, and in fact is a part of the judgment, as God gives them up to these sins.
I know. I already said that what I wrote was not meant to deny that.
As for sins of Manasseh, America is quite guilty of all form of idolatry, including covetousness. Las Vegas is basically a city temple of idolatry. Hollywood also, human idols.
And again, if you look for secular voices against that, it will be leftist voices. Las Vegas and Hollywood are examples of free market … the industry delivers according to the demand.
Jerusalem was also filled with blood. Here you have abortion, you have mass shootings, gang violence , and all kind of heinous murders, including child murders.
And the party which tries to reduce the amount of murders by restricting the distribution of automatic weapons, is not the same as the party which fights against abortion.
May Jesus return soon! Come, LORD Jesus!
Amen.

Incorrect. The truth is it was the Democrat leadership the became a threat to democracy. That is is one of the reasons why Trump was elected. Heavy-handed tactics were used against Biden's political opponents.

I've never read anything by John Piper, mainly because my Olive Tree app repeatedly spams me with his many books (petty, I know)
But now I think I might have to give him a second look. He is clearly a man of uncommon wisdom.

Piper sounds right since both Democrats and Republicans contain different kinds of errors and falsity which they implement with evil effects. So as the test of a Democrat administration passes, now we have the test of a Republican one.

The Democrats promoted perverts, pronouns and baby killers and seemed intent on the emasculation of America's manhood. The Republicans do not care about poor people and are gun-ho hypocrites who use the name of God to cover over all kinds of corruption and sin.

But I disagree with his 2023 statement that a Christian should not vote. You should always pick the lesser of two evils. From an international perspective, it seemed Trump, as an isolationist, was the greater evil, at least at face value (we have yet to see how he will act), but the church in the USA mainly disagrees with that point of view as they voted for him.
