I'm planning on making soul cakes and offering an akathist for the departed. What do you think? Are you doing something similar?
Prayers for the dead.Sounds interesting. What is an akathist?
I guess we don't do anything. We are far from any town so we don't even buy candy.
Did you read my title? Why celebrate a holiday for demons, devils, zombies, and death???
This "word pseudo holiday" glorifies Satan and his minions. It's a dark "holiday", just look at the tv and culture.
Christmas and Thanksgiving have redeeming qualities: you celebrate the birth of Christ (any day counts) and you give thanks unto the Lord......
but what redeeming qualities does Halloween have? None, it is all about demons.
"But under the tunic of each of the dead they found amulets sacred to the idols of Jamnia, which the law forbids the Jews to wear. So it was clear to all that this was why these men had been slain. They all therefore praised the ways of the Lord, the just judge who brings to light the things that are hidden. Turning to supplication, they prayed that the sinful deed might be fully blotted out. The noble Judas warned the soldiers to keep themselves free from sin, for they had seen with their own eyes what had happened because of the sin of those who had fallen. He then took up a collection among all his soldiers, amounting to two thousand silver drachmas, which he sent to Jerusalem to provide for an expiatory sacrifice. In doing this he acted in a very excellent and noble way, inasmuch as he had the resurrection of the dead in view; for if he were not expecting the fallen to rise again, it would have been useless and foolish to pray for them in death. But if he did this with a view to the splendid reward that awaits those who had gone to rest in godliness, it was a holy and pious thought. Thus he made atonement for the dead that they might be freed from this sin." (2 Maccabees 12:40-46).The dead are dead, please provide some official scripture.
That's why I said "my Halloween".That's like saying Christianizing Hollywood. It's just not going to happen, might as well promote it.
Catholics celebrate All Hallow's Eve and Lutherans Reformation Day.Maybe we need to invent a "Holyween" and have a Christian theme. We just gotta figure out what's relevant to Christians at the end of October.
There are also akathists on different subjects.Prayers for the dead.
I have a better idea, morse. The dead are dead, please provide some official scripture.
Hi David, Halloween is on October 31st. Of course, so is Reformation Day, so I'll be celebrating that insteadI'm planning on making soul cakes and offering an akathist for the departed. What do you think? Are you doing something similar?

If I ever do decide to hand out candy to trick or treaters, I'll give them Hershey bars with Luther's 95 Theses printed on the wrapper (in honor of the only holiday worth celebrating on that day ).

I'm curious do you know if Muslims pray for the dead.If you want a harvest festival there is Sukkot also known as the Feast of Tabernacles.....
It's not on Halloween, but it's part of our faith which I'm sure would be better.
It would definitely be a celebration of Jesus instead of some death cult thing...

Hi Hazelelponi, my church celebrates an annual harvest festival for the kids (in place of celebrating Halloween). I don't believe we started doing it because of Sukkot, but I'm going to find out (because that sounds like a great idea ).If you want a harvest festival there is Sukkot also known as the Feast of Tabernacles.....
