BBC News - Children's shows to leave BBC One

Children's programmes will no longer be shown on BBC One and Two following the digital switchover, the BBC Trust has confirmed.
Award-winning shows such as Horrible Histories and Blue Peter will move permanently to CBBC and CBeebies.

End of an era. This news story made me very nostalgic for the 80's when I was growing up.

Indeedy...
I just wish i could remember the shows i watched on those channels when i was growing up in the 90's.

I have a feeling i watched channel 4 and ITV more than the BBCs...

The shows I remember the best from the 90's that were on the BBC was "The Ren and Stimpy show" and "The animals of farthing wood".

Incidently, anyone remember this show?

I've been trying to remember the name of that show for YEARS.
THANKS!:D:D:D:D:D

As for Ren and Stimpy, I never really took well to it.
Something didn't sit right with me.
I preferred Rocko's Modern Life.:)

Always seems to be CBBC after school or at the weekend and channel 4 in the mornings during school holidays for me.

The broom Cupboard with Andy Peters and Edd the Duck was my regular viewing as a child. No doubt it'll be replaced by more repeats of Cash in the Attic and Homes Under the Hammer.

I remember it well, it ran for ages and I never recall viewing a repeat.

Does anyone remember Into the Labyrinth?

I deny you the Nidus!

A lack of quality writers. And lack of imagination. Apart from The Sarah Jane Adventures and one or two others, the output on children's BBC is rubbish.

I doubt there is a lack of quality writers, I would suggest that the good writers are simply not getting picked up.

Writing for TV 20 years ago was a completely different ballgame than it is now.

Something else I've noticed about the nature of childrens tv; When I was growing up we'd see loads of older classics such as Disney, looney toons, tom and jerry etc... But they just don't get shown anymore.

That is weird...

Always liked the fact that CBBC tended to show 95% British made shows, rather then imported American rubbish like ch4 did in summer and Sky kids channels do. But then, as BBC is funded by the Brisish public, I suppose they are more obliged to invest and promote British talents and abilities.

Comes as no surprise though to the abolishment of kids shows on BBC1. Now the BBC have their own dedicated channels, it seems daft to compete with their own channels. Just a shame they'll fit the gap with another low budget mindless entertainment programe, rather then decant quality, which seems to be the trent with the BBC now.

I recently watched a couple of those old cartoons on a specific YouTube channel and they were horribly racist. Shockingly so. Admittedly, some of them were very old, but even Bugs Bunny, Tom and Jerry (anyone remember the stocky black legs of the maid?) and Walt Disney cartoons portrayed black people in such a stereotypical fashion.

I know they make new Tom and Jerry cartoons on some of specialist kids channels, but you won't see any of the old ones because it is not deemed politically correct. I was always aware of the connotations from a young age and I'm happy those particular cartoons, acceptable in the 70s and 80s are confined to some deep dark store cupboard. It was interesting watching some of them because it certainly highlighed a time in African American history that must been hell to live through.

As a youngster (I'd have been about 11 at the time, I guess?), I had quite a crush on Pamela Salem. :)

Always used to love the fantasy/sci-fi serials - The Box of Delights, The Chronicles of Narnia, Aliens in the Family, Dark Season (by one Russell T. Davies, not sure if he ever went on to do anything else :) ). To be honest, nowadays the channel that something's on isn't really an issue - I'll just Sky+ it or iPlayer it.

The quality of children's tv has drastically declined and this move really comes as no surprise.

I think the quality of TV as a whole has declined. As you say, it's not a surprise - the BBC alone has BBC1, BBC2, BBC3, BBC4, CBBC, CBeebies, the BBC News Channel, all with schedules to fill. Sadly, it's easier to fill the schedules with cheap tat (and/or repeats) than with quality programmes made with care and effort. There are some gems in the schedule, but...I think it's telling that the best programme (IMO) that I've seen on the BBC lately has been The Bridge, which, um, isn't actually made by the BBC...
