I think the best way to help homeless animals is to educate people about the importance of spaying and neutering and to subsidize the surgeries when needed.
Is anybody aware of a charity that focuses on that? There should be advertisements explaining that every kitten or puppy born causes the death of some other animal. There seem to be an incredible number of people who still don't understand this simple fact. Kittens and puppies are so cute that people forget all about the deaths that inevitably result from the births (as the new animals enter the shelters the old animals that aren't adopted must be euthanized to make room).
