What are your views of the charismatic church?

Must a person be able to speak in tongue before he/she can
'move in the spirit' (cast out demons, prophesy, etc)

Should everyone speak in tongues?

Are people who don't pray in the spirit missing out on intimacy with God?

People like Mary Baxter have been said to move a lot in the gifts of the Holy Spirit...but what she saw ('divine revelation of hell/heaven/spiritual realm --warfare) contradicts w/ Bible Teaching, hence we label her as a false teacher. What does this mean? (--that she can still move in gifts of Holy Spirit?)

Rick Joyner of Morning Star ministries..some of his prophecies were false. Yet He moves in the gifts of the Holy Spirit. And supposedly 'used' by God.

Is God working through these people..if what they say/do is suspect, when checked with the Bible? Or are people always to be imperfect in carrying out God's work because they are by nature imperfect? Can we say that God can't be using people ( in terms of the gifts of Holy Spirit) if what they say/do doesn't tally with Scripture.

Sorry, these are a lot of questions. I might edit later to make myself more clear. Basically I have all these questions about people in charismatic + pentecostal churches.

God bless, and I hope for a fruitful discussion so that God may open my mind to more understanding...and maybe open my heart to go back to a 'charismatic' styled church.

Iffy

ps>subject is actually book of same name by John F MacArthur..still reading it..

Must a person be able to speak in tongue before he/she can

No.

Should everyone speak in tongues?

If led by the Spirit to do so. It isn't required.

Are people who don't pray in the spirit missing out on intimacy with God?

IMHO, yes. Again, though, it isn't necessary. Personally, I derive a significant edification from praying in the spirit.

What are your views of the charismatic church?

Well meaning. Usually focused too much on the gifts of the spirit and not enough on sound doctrine.

I think most "charismatic" churches do not use the gifts of the spirit as outlined in 1 Cor. 14. That is as far as their worship services are concerned.

The good part is they focus on a very personal relationship with God and the JOY of our salvation that I think many older, established denominations tend to overlook a little.

'move in the spirit' (cast out demons, prophesy, etc)

No. Many people cast out evil spirits in the name of the Lord only and i'm one of them and i did not use the gift of tongues

Should everyone speak in tongues?

Not all for it is a specific gift, just like the other gifts

Are people who don't pray in the spirit missing out on intimacy with God?

Depends on your term praying in the spirit. But yes many will miss out intimacy for we must always pray in the Spirit

What are your views of the charismatic church?

Some of them(not all) tend to emphasize on spiritual gifts too much and the word is not that deeply implanted in their hearts. They rely on to much emotion and not much fruit.

Just as tericl2 said:

But always be wary and test the spirit in anything just like Paul said.

Hope that helped:)

I have a few concerns about charismatic churches.

1. The W.O.F. teachings are a real problem for me. name and it and claim it specifically.

2. Because of the name it and claim it, it is very easy to be self-centered and look for blessings whereever you go, instead of being a blessing whereever you go.

3. There is a lack of getting into the word of G-d to study to show thyself approved.

Let me add that I went to charismatic hurches for over 7 years and even received a literal miracle under the ministry of Kim Clement (I was healed of chronic bronchitis). But those are my concerns.

Hi Linda,
First off, why do you write God as G-d? I have noticed others doing this to and I always wondered...

I'm not sure what WCF stands for but am guessing F stands for Faith?

I have heard that a lot of charismatic churches teach prosperity and things like that...

What you said about..'name it , claim it'.. I agree...people can become greedy and lose focus on what being a Christian is about. Ie to be like Jesus. I think if anyone teaches about servanthood, it can't go very wrong.

Thank you for your reply tericl! You said The good part is they focus on a very personal relationship with God and the JOY of our salvation. I agree! This sheds light on some other things that were previously on my mind too.

I am ashamed to admit that I once thought that Christians who didn't speak in tongues/ didn't believe in speaking in tongues didn't have a very personal relationship with God..that their relationship with God missed the 'oomph' that charismatics had...simply because they hadn't experienced God's power revealed like in the churches that moved in the Holy Spirit and because they hadn't received the gift of tongues.

It was only when I went to a christian convention and saw for myself different denominations together...Regardless of very different preferences in worship music and things like that, I saw that this people were just as passionate about God. Something which my mind could not conceive before.

Now that you mentioned that the charismatic church emphasised the relationship more, I understand more why I thought the way I did.

Many times the mind cannot comprehend what the person has not personally experienced. I speak in tongues myself. When I was struggling with my issues about charismatic churches, I found myself praying in the Spirit...yet unedified. And I think what the apostle Paul said is true. Love is the greatest gift. By that, it follows that our heart is most important. It matters not if I speak in tongues but have the right heart before and towards God and the things of God.

Being in a charismatic church also made me desire more for experiences than loving God's Word. But recently, I found 'power' and 'excitement' in God's Word alone... so for that I'm grateful to God...and very happy.

But I am still wary of charismatic churches...

Hello Iffy!

I asked a messianic rabbi about why I would see others referring to him in print that way and he explained it to me by referring to his relationship with his father. His father's peers, or equals, could call him by his first name; but out of love and respect, he would never call his own father by name. That made a lot of sense to me. So when I use the *-* it helps me to remember.

Regarding what church do I go to...well, I am pretty radical. I consider myself a fundamentalist, tongue praying, headcovering, messianic. In other words, I don't really fit into most "denominations".

I am legally blind so I can no longer drive and my dh doesn't yet go to a church, so I am personally in the word of G-d as much as I can be and as obedient to my huysband as I cn be so that he will become obedient to the Word by the conviction of the Holy Spirit.

Please be careful of Word of Faith (W.O.F.) churches. There are some wonderful christians who attend, but some of the teachings are horrible.

Although I am not "charismatic" in the contemporary usage of the term, I am Biblically charismatic. As a conservative Lutheran pastor I helped start (and now teach at) a Bible College based out of a charismatic church. One of the keys for me was the willingness of the pastoral staff (nine) and elders to faithfully wait on the Lord. They tested everything said. Some "big names" in the charismatic circles have asked to come and preach. But the church will not even consider them. Why? Because they do not seem to be under the authority of a local church nor church leaders. They refuse to abide by the local leadership of the churches (kind a like: "I'm God's spokesman, I'll decide what needs to be said - you just accept!"). The leadership of this church tests everything. They know the needs of the congregation (~2,000) and they have a good sense of whether someone is filled with the Spirit or filled with hot air.

Are they perfect? No, but they wait on the Lord.

[BTW, I am not a member there, but I received critical ministry there a few years ago. They were the only ones to reach out to me in a life-changing crisis. I am mentoring a younger Lutheran pastor and teach at a Lutheran mission congregation.]

Heya Linda : )

Thank you for the explanation! I kind of liked it but don't know if I will start calling God that way too. Most times I address Him as Father in prayer because that relationship is very special to me.

I hope your husband comes to know God soon and I trust He will because He has a praying and God-fearing wife!

Hmm. I have not heard of W.O.F. churches...I have bought a few books on charismatic churches...one is a book very much like a little encyclopaedia (sp) of the charismatic movement. I might find the W.O.F in there.

My Mom says I need to go to a 'charismatic' church because we need the power of the Holy Spirit. Actually since reading a bit and hearing a bit about differing views on charismatic churches...I really don't like the word 'charismatic' anymore..because it has negative meanings. I don't know how to describe it. Just like some words have been associated with negative things because of the actions of men...the same for 'charismatic'. But my Mom stresses the importance of good Biblical teaching too....and I am looking for a balanced church.

Thanks for sharing, I enjoyed it.

uummm.
im a charismatic, and i always will be.
well, i am a pentecostal. i dont want to agree to anyones stereotype of charismatic.

1. well, there is power in the name of jesus, great power. and if you only believe all things are possible. but "THE GIFTS" listed in 1 cor 12. are given by the holyghost as it clearly says, and i dont remember any time in the bible when those who were actually filled or baptised in the holyspirit did not at some time speak in tongues. speaking in tongues is the very evidence being filled with the holyspirt. but you do not have to be OPERATING IN THE GIFTS to do what those gifts symbolise.
as for example the
"GIFT OF FAITH",
all christians have faith, only through faith in jesus are we saved in the first place. so, you can have faith WITHOUT HAVING THE GIFT OF FAITH.
"GIFT OF HEALING"
many many christians have been healed by prayer, the blood of jesus, and confessing the name of jesus, when these christians were not yet filled with the holyghost with the evidence of speaking in tongues, leading to say they were not "filled or baptised" with the holyghost leading to say they were not OPERATING IN THE GIFT OF HEALING.
"GIFT OF WISDOM"
there are many wise men upon the earth, many are heathen men who have not even met jesus, so could not be "OPERATING IN THE GIFTS". yet they do have wisdom.

the point im trying to make is you do not have to be filled with the holyspirit to work in the power of god or do what the gift of the spirit symbolises. history and the bible prove it.
like, THE GIFT OF HEALING. symbolises healing. yet you can have healing through jesus' alone, apart from being filled with the holyghost.

so, just because there is a "GIFT OF HEALING" does not mean you cant be healed or heal someone else without speaking in tongues as those filled with the holyghost will do.
just as there is a "GIFT OF FAITH" it doesnt mean you cant have faith unless you speak in tongues.
so on and so on.

the diffrence between a "GIFT OF THE SPIRIT" work, and a work that is entitled to every believer in jesus name is this.
for example,
jesus was walking down the road, had no idea what was going on, had no idea some woman was going to touch him and be healed. HE SAID WHO TOUCHED ME? she touched him, and she was healed. it was the work of the holyspirit, the "GIFT OF HEALING". yet, we can ask "ANYTHING IN THE NAME OF JESUS AND IT SHALL BE GIVEN" that includes healing.
but jesus did not ask for this, he didnt even know it was going to happen.
the gifts of the holy are like that, if your operating in the gifts of the holyspirit your shadow may heal the sick, even when you had no idea anyone was in your shadow, or someone may touch you and be healed even though you had no idea a person was about to touch you.
or, you may not have enough faith to believe in something "like a person being raised from the dead" the human mind can not believe that, not in my opinion anyway.
so, then THE GIFT OF FAITH can operate. doing more than you could have done alone, or simply in the name of jesus.
the same with the other gifts,
they represent the holy spirit doing things through you that you could not have done by yourself in anyway at all.

"ephesains 3.20
he is able to do exceeding abundantly above all YOU COULD ASK OR THINK, according the POWER(dunamis) that worketh within you.
when DUNAMIS or power (what we receive when filled with the holyghost in acts 1) is working in you, things will happen around you that you could not have asked for, or even though were possible.

"AND YES, BEING SAVED IN THE NAME OF JESUS, IS NOT THE SAME AS BEING FILLED WITH THE HOLYGHOST".
paul once asked a group of people
HAVE YOU BEEN FILLED "SINCE" YOU FIRST BELIEVED?
he knew they were 2 diffrent things. as they are. the disciples had to tarry for it, we no longer have to tarry for it becuase it is here waiting on us now, but we do need to recieve it after being saved.

2. should every person speak in tongues?
it is possible for everyone too, jesus said that anyone who believed could.
speaking in tongues can be a PRAYER LANGUAGE, a WORSHIP LANGUAGE or the "GIFT OF THE SPIRIT" to edify the entire body. i can pray in tongues at home all alone, and it is not the same thing as the "MESSAGE IN TONGUES THAT CAN NOT BE DONE UNLESS THERE 2 OR 3 AROUND ME WHO CAN INTERPRET IT"
if it is to be interpreted, it is for everyone.
but sometimes, im just trying to pray, and i do not know what to pray, so the THE SPIRIT PRAYS FOR ME as the bible teaches he can do so.
the people came out of the upperroom speaking in tongues, people understood "but it was not interpreted" and it was speaking of the great works of god "not prayer".
SO, NOT ALL TONGUES NEED TO BE INTERPRETED as the "GIFT OF TONGUES" do. and the "GIFTS" are always for the edification of the entire body. and you certainly can pray in tongues, but how could my prayer to god edify anyone else? it doesnt. so, not all tongues are the gift of the spirit.
the ability to speaking in tognues as any holyspirit filled person will, is not the same thing as the "GIFT OF TONGUES".

3. are people who pray in the spirit missing out.
well, you do not have to "pray in the spirit" to know god.
moses knew god better than anyone alive on this earth today in my opinion, he saw him face to face. yet, i dont remember him "praying in the spirit" or praying at all in that situation. praying in the holyspirit is to accomplish something that is beyond your ability, maby you dont know what to ask for, and you let the holyspirit ask for you.
i myself do not see praying in the spirit as an intamicy thing, but as something that is meant to accomplish a certain purpose.

4. are people who mess up still working in god?
well, we all mess up. and even the greatest men and women of god need to CONFIRM EVERY WORD IN THE MOUTHS OF 2 OR 3 people.
even the greatest can miss the mark sometimes. we strive to be the perfect jesus, but do you know anyone whos there yet?
i really doubt it.

yes i believe that if you do not speak in tongues, then no you are not filled with the holyspirit. yet it doesnt mean you arent saved or love god any less than someone who is filled.
it may sound like pride for someone who is filled with the holyspirit to look at a godly person and say NO YOU ARE NOT FILLED YET.
but, would it be pride for bill gates to simply state that YES HE IS THE RICHEST MAN IN THE WORLD? no, its simply fact.
many deny that you must speak in tongues, because they simply are proud and dont want to admit that they dont have something someone else has. though im no less than bill gates, but i do not have the money he has, simply becuase i havent done what hes done to get it.

do what is required, and youll be filled anyone can be. but dont be proud and refuse to admit that you are not.

Thanks for replying filosofer. A friend of mine from a 'conservative' (sorry I don't know what other word to use) church also said something similar when I asked her if she was 'charismatic'. I suppose you know what I meant when I said charismatic. Is that the 'contemporary' sense of the word? Meanings of words keep changing all the time. To a non Christian, charismatic would mean...Oprah Winfery...or some other person who has the ability to draw and attract others to them. For a Christian, it means another thing. Anyways I am just clarifying in my own rambly way.

Your reply has been helpful. I think anyone who rejects accountability and claims to be God's spokesperson alone...is suspect.

With Jesus as exception, God doesn't use men as 'superhero' types. I think we all hold a piece of the jigsaw and need to come together to make sense of the bigger picture. God in His wisdom, knows the weaknesses of men and would never give men that kind of 'power' over men. Does that make sense?

Anyways glad to read your input!
God bless,
Iffy

Hi Psalms22.3!
Your reply was a little hard to read but I am going to read through it again to reply...

stereotype of charismatic.
Until recently, I have always called myself a charismatic...are there stereotypes? I don't know. I remember 'Market Day' at Uni..freshman year...I went up
to the guys at Campus Christian Movement and said..Nice to meet you! I'm looking for a church!! One guy said, 'You must be charismatic'. Yup, how did you know? 'Because ...you are so excited to look for a church..?'Ohh......... If that's the stereotype - excited for God, passionate, ..It's very good I have to say.

speaking in tongues is the very evidence being filled with the holyspirt.

you have to clarify what you mean by 'filled with the Holy Spirit'. All believers have the Holy Spirit living in them.

as for example the
"GIFT OF FAITH",
all christians have faith, only through faith in jesus are we saved in the first place. so, you can have faith WITHOUT HAVING THE GIFT OF FAITH.

From my understanding, not all believers have the gift of faith. If you have the gift of faith, you have a very very strong, unshakable faith. It is not the kind of faith you and I have.

I don't quite follow. Can you rephrase please?

"GIFT OF WISDOM"
there are many wise men upon the earth, many are heathen men who have not even met jesus, so could not be "OPERATING IN THE GIFTS". yet they do have wisdom.

I don't follow but I think your next statement clears this up..so I'll go look again..

the point im trying to make is you do not have to be filled with the holyspirit to work in the power of god or do what the gift of the spirit symbolises. history and the bible prove it.

I wonder why you mentioned heathen men. Because it is not really relevant. I am only concerned about believers. Ok, maybe this will show you where I'm coming from. I helped out in a Carlos Annacondia rally...
There were some 'criteria' for the different teams. For all teams (counselling, healing & deliverance, ushering)..
everyone had to have a relationship with God. For healing & deliverance, everyone had to speak in tongues. Someone (opinions are always questionable) confidently told me that you can't do healing /deliverance if you are not baptised in the Holy Spirit.

like, THE GIFT OF HEALING. symbolises healing. yet you can have healing through jesus' alone, apart from being filled with the holyghost.

I don't know much about the gift of healing...

I'm not sure about some of the things you typed so I'm going to go straight to something which I am concerned about and that you mentioned ok?

2. should every person speak in tongues?
it is possible for everyone too, jesus said that anyone who believed could.
speaking in tongues can be a PRAYER LANGUAGE, a WORSHIP LANGUAGE or the "GIFT OF THE SPIRIT" to edify the entire body. i can pray in tongues at home all alone, and it is not the same thing as the "MESSAGE IN TONGUES THAT CAN NOT BE DONE UNLESS THERE 2 OR 3 AROUND ME WHO CAN INTERPRET IT"

If it is possible, everyone should? People are missing out if they don't?

Speaking in tongues is something I have always associated with power. I heard a preacher say that if you pray in tongues for 10 minutes every day..in can change your life. Such formulaic advice...sounds bad to most ears. But anyway, I tried it...an area in my life that was troubling me very much did change. I only noticed it suddenly and can only attribute it to God.

My friend is walking in a dark alley with her Mom. She senses 'evil'. She and her Mom start praying in tongues and instantly feel better.

Some days I am tired emotionally, physically.. I pray in tongues and I feel rejuvenated! When I feel a dark presence, I pray in tongues, and the darkness goes away. I feel that praying in tongues is like a direct connection to God..because i am praying in a spiritual tongue and God is spirit. Not that God can't understand my human words...but that my spirit is able to say what my human mind can't. So I know what you say...about praying in the spirit...and edification.

But I have experienced...where...your heart is not right before God...tongues don't make much difference.. If someone doesn't speak in tongues but his/her heart is so aligned with God's heart....I think that person is so much more blessed than the one who is spiritually gifted but whose heart is not right.

3. are people who pray in the spirit missing out.
well, you do not have to "pray in the spirit" to know god.
moses knew god better than anyone alive on this earth today in my opinion, he saw him face to face. yet, i dont remember him "praying in the spirit" or praying at all in that situation. praying in the holyspirit is to accomplish something that is beyond your ability, maby you dont know what to ask for, and you let the holyspirit ask for you.
i myself do not see praying in the spirit as an intamicy thing, but as something that is meant to accomplish a certain purpose.

My relationship with God became intimate when two things happened - baptism of the Holy Spirit and Mom gave me a study Bible! : )

4. are people who mess up still working in god?
well, we all mess up. and even the greatest men and women of god need to CONFIRM EVERY WORD IN THE MOUTHS OF 2 OR 3 people.
even the greatest can miss the mark sometimes. we strive to be the perfect jesus, but do you know anyone whos there yet?
i really doubt it.

My concern is people like Rick Joyner who make big claims, write books...talk about intimate spiritual encounters...DIRECT revelations from God...yet 'miss the mark'. Since you mentioned Moses...did Moses miss the mark as in tell the people that something was from God when it actually was not???

many deny that you must speak in tongues, because they simply are proud and dont want to admit that they dont have something someone else has. though im no less than bill gates, but i do not have the money he has, simply becuase i havent done what hes done to get it.

I don't think it is a pride issue at all. If a person can accept that he/she needs Jesus, he/she has laid down their pride. Because they are willing to accept God's gift, God's grace. If tongues is another gift, I am sure they would want to accept it. The problem is, they do not see it as a gift for today. That is all.

Are people who don't pray in the spirit missing out on intimacy with God?

Actually, I feel more intimate with God when I don't try to "speak in tongues," for two reasons. I feel less foolish and uncomfortable when not trying to make up a new language, and second, I believe that the Lord understands me just fine when I speak English to Him. I'm pretty sure He understands English.

My friends who pray in tongues say that making up the sounds in their heads distracts them from the message they are trying to get across to God and pretty soon making the sounds becomes more important than the content of the prayer. They say they usually have to repeat their prayer time in English so they cna keep on track. Many of them say that speaking in tongues is their worship time because they get the emotional high from it, but their pray time isn't productive unless the stick to English.

Apparently. I have friends that are linguist who have listened to me praying in tongues and they tell me that my sounds aren't any known human language. They have told me that it is rare for "speaking in tongues" to be a known human language. In fact, most of the time the tongue-speaker can't even repeat what they said a minute ago, the sounds get all changed! Sometimes the tongue-speaker will even change what they claimed a certain sound pattern meant!
