I noticed that in my parish, the Charismatic prayer group has their moral codes (don't want to call it law) from that of the parish. For instance; the church allowed drinking of alcohol, but the Charismatic completely frowned at it; member who indulge is given excommunication. Church frowned at invoking dead on enemies while praying but charismatic does it all the time. I want to know if the Charismatic has the authority to regulate conducts among it members independent of the church. And why most of them tend to lean more toward Protestantism than Catholicism

We teamed up with Faith Counseling. Can they help you today?

I came from the Cath Char Renewal (since 1972), and serve one of the last couple remaining groups in Delaware as music leader, may I post here? If not, delete the post and let me know.

There is no special authority in the Catholic Renewal. All are Catholics. They may not excommunicate. I can not imagine any of their leaders even wanting to try such a thing. The reason they frown on certain things is that they feel led to follow those lifestyles by the Holy Spirit. They are simply sharing what they feel God has given them as understandings of how to live. I have never heard any invoke the dead on their enemies; can you give an example? As far as leaning toward Protestantism, a better way to put it is that they lean towards active, affirmative ecumenism.

It is possible that your parish has a group that is doing things it should not be doing. Why not ask your prayer group leader these questions, and if his/her answers are not acceptable, let the the pastor know?

The excommunication is not from the parish but from the Renewal as a group or they return you to group 'A' class which is the beginners' class and you redo life in the spirit seminar just like the new comers.

Some time what they frowned at is approved by the church this result to conflict of interest_as a catholic, I should do what the church approved without intimidation from the group I belong. These spirit led lifestyles often set them in contrast with the main stream catholics. People often refer to CCR as catholic protestants and many members many a times behaves that way_after receiving the power they leave the group including the parish for the establishment of individual congregation. This trend continue to tear the church apart.

One popular case is the case of the founder of Watchman Catholic Charismatic Renewal Movement who was a staunch CCR. This is just one of the many numerous such cases.

Most of these pressing issues were raised in the annual general meeting of recent with many accusations and counter-accusations from the church and the group with no tangible headway.

Regarding the prayer I spoke about; in this part of the world, you hear people praying like: God, destroy my destroyer, render my enemies incapacitated, fire, fire, fire burn anyone who doesn't want to agreed on anything good about me_such prayer mode is common in Africa. Despite reprimands by the priest, it refuses to cease.

If it was me, I'd quit the group. I don't know anything about Africa, but none of this has even happened in the USA to my knowledge. You do not need to be in such a group to pray in tongues and seek Jesus as a Spirit filled believer. For whatever it's worth, I have run into certain similar issues with African Pentecostals attempting to plant churches in the USA. This could be cultural. It is not, I repeat, not permitted under any laws or customs that have ever been used in the USA among charismatics. And it is in my country that all this started.

Further Watchman is not Catholic. Their statement of faith (I just checked) uses the Protestant Bible of 66 books. They also use juice, not wine for the eucharist. Having such a group running around claiming to be Catholic must be encouraging all kinds of bad things.
