Feds decline to release list of 147 nursing homes stricken by coronavirus

Two federal agencies, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), have a list of 147 nursing homes where at least one resident has contracted COVID-19. But The Washington Post reports that the agencies are refusing to release this list to the public.

Like playing ‘Russian roulette’: DeSantis won’t say which elder care homes have coronavirus

The state Department of Health said that, as of Monday, 33 Floridians living in a skilled nursing or assisted living facility had tested positive for the coronavirus, the respiratory infection that has become a global scourge. At least three long-term care residents have died from the infection.

But that’s about all health administrators, and Gov. Ron DeSantis, are saying.

For about two weeks, journalists and elder advocates have pressed state leaders to release information about where long-term care residents and staff have been exposed to the extremely contagious infection. The DeSantis administration has alternated between No and Maybe.

I wouldn't think that patient confidentiality would matter to name the facility. It's possible authorities are trying to prevent some 'rush' of families trying to evacuate their loved ones and causing more spread, but this doesn't inspire confidence.

Information like that is best kept on a "need to know" basis to alleviate panic. The families certainly need to know.

Who is going to panic other than the families?

Will the local townies get their torches and pitchforks together to burn the nursing home down? I'd like to think not.

    They are private nursing homes.
So you are asking for transparency from private individuals. All people with the virus should release their conditions to the public and where they reside. This would solve your problem. You should release your medical condition and your day to day schedule to the public. And everywhere you visit, in case we need to back track.

Checks title of thread. CDC and Florida governor are not private individuals.

Checks title of thread. Nursing homes are not private individuals either. I alluded to patient confidentiality. I'm not asking for people to reveal their conditions, or for the authorities to reveal them.

Corporations are legally treated as distinct individual people with certain rights. And they are private. As are all the residents who have not given permission to be revealed.
The governor and cdc may not have permission.

I'm pretty sure none of the corporations have COVID-19, so their medical privacy is certainly not an issue.

Look, I think the point your trying to make is tantamount to the CDC saying, "We've discovered that someone has put potassium cyanide in a popular name brand painkiller, but we won't tell you which one, because drug manufacturers are private entities."

    Nobody has asked for that.

No, this is a disease, not a crime, and you have no right to know anything
about sick people or where they live or who is ill.

This has always been true. It's none of your business.
