The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is launching an overhaul of its structure and operations in an attempt to modernize the agency and rehabilitate its reputation following intense criticism of its handling of the coronavirus pandemic and, more recently, the growing monkeypox outbreak.

CDC director orders agency overhaul, admitting flawed Covid-19 response

Wherever you stand on this issue, it is good to see the CDC admitting it failed in its response and is looking to improve its process.

Lets be clear, this is about improving communication with the public.

Its not any about face on the basic contents of their recommendations nor how they arrived at them.
Or why they changed so frequently and did nothing to curb covid and monkeypox?

I think if the CDC was left alone to do its work without the interference of erratic, impulsive politicians unschooled in medicine they would not have lost the faith of the portion of the American public who pay attention to whoever shouts the loudest.
It is to be expected that the CDC might change course as they learn more and more about a brand new pandemic disease. That doesn't mean they bungled--it means that they can adjust to new information.

I do think theres a lot of room for improvement at CDC, at least as I experienced it from the "consumer" side.

Otoh, with covid there was something of a moving target of shifting variants with evolving virulence and consequence. Cross that with notions of "acceptable risk" that are more cultural than scientific. Its a recipe for a communications mess.
