WEST ST. PAUL, Minn. — The students fifth-grade teacher Kathy Wilcox taught at St. Joseph’s Catholic School in West St. Paul, Minnesota, during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic are now in eighth grade, and she is proud of how they emerged academically from the difficult period of online learning.

“As a teacher, you have goals, and it was really important to us that our students didn’t lose any of those goals even though it was a horrific time,” she told the Register.

Results from an assessment known as the “Nation’s Report Card” released by the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) this past week show that U.S. Catholic-school fourth- and eighth-graders didn’t lose significant academic ground during the pandemic and outperformed public schools in all categories.

I find it interesting that when our liberal media reports on something like this, it is presented like a FYI post with just the highest level of facts and no commentary. This allows them the time to go on their nightly 5 minute anti-Trump tirade with a lot of eye-rolling and smirks. So when they talked about the drop in test scores there was no commentary on why, no talk about differences between schools or regions, just a bullet point fact and on to the next topic. This is the journalistic equivalent of a nightly dose of castor oil, something that has to be done; but best done quickly. I did not hear any of them act in the least reflective and say, "Maybe we were wrong in advocating schools to close for so long." or "In hindsight, the number of children that died from COVID did not justify the extreme measures to protect them from getting it." Truly journalists that deal in ambiguities the most of any other career have become the most calcified of individuals.
