Our salvation is a journey upwards, towards holiness. Like a hike up a mountain, with Christ in front. The prayers, devotions, Sacraments, and traditions of the Church are meant to give us strength, help, healing, and graces as we climb. Indulgences help heal the injury done by sin, the world, our flesh, and fallenness.

Surly you are not informed of where "Indulgences" came from or you probably would re-think your comment. That is actually the reason you do not see very much conversation on the subject because those Catholics who do know, simply hope that it does not come up because there is NO good answer for it.

The buying and selling of indulgences is what helped to launch the Reformation my dear sister.

Basically, indulgences could be purchased in order to reduce the punishment you were owed for your sins. Buy an indulgence for a loved one, and they would go to heaven and not burn in hell. Buy an indulgence for yourself, and you needn't worry about that pesky affair you'd been having.

It is exactly like PAYING off God and keep right on doing what was know to be sin.

If this sounds like cash or good deeds for less pain or sin committed that is exactly what it was. To many holy people like Martin Luther, this was against Jesus, against the idea of the church, against the point of seeking forgiveness and redemption. When Luther acted against it, Europe had evolved to the point that it would split in the revolution of the 'Reformation'.

Just so you would know!
