No one has called you any names while you have called at least one member here a vigilante.

I didnt "call" anyone a vigilante. Several people described themselves as being a vigilante. They said it. They defined who they were. They were the ones who advocate taking the law into their own hands.

Anyone, and everyone, who advocates taking the law into their own hands, is a vigilante. That is what they are saying. I cant help it if you dont like the "word".

IF someone describes themselves as being a democrat, acts like a democrat, looks like a democrat, smells like a democrat, advocates being a democrat, says they are a democrat, then anyone else using the word "democrat" as the correct term to describe them, is not "calling" them anything.

IF you tell everybody that you are six years old, nobody is "calling" you a child, you yourself are telling us that you ARE a child.

Dictionary:
vigilante

One who takes or advocates the taking of law enforcement into one's own hands.

There is a proper way to deal with what happened in this story. We have laws, we have police, we have courts, judges, prisons, etc. We dont need some untrained, incompetent, unarmed, unauthorized yahoo making any situation potentially much worse by playing cop.

We spend a lot of time equipping and training police officers, and we spend a lot of money for police, prisons, courts, etc.

America does not need, nor want, an incompetent vigilante.

If you want to play "cop", then get a law enforcement degree, and get employed as a police officer.

That's right, because helping others that are in danger, requires someone who is "qualified" and not a normal citizen. Do me a favor. When your house is on fire, don't try to put the fire out. You aren't a fireman, so you have no business putting fires out.

I think you are getting the point.

Calling the fire department when your house is on fire, is the smart thing to do.

I think most smart people, given a choice between calling the fire department, or calling you, will call the fire department.

Firemen also rescue people inside burning buildings. Would you wait until the fire department arrives to escort you outside? Or would you get the heck outta there so you won't die? I'm trained in the proper handling and discharge of firearms, my record is expunged, I have a permit to carry, and given the circumstances and opportunity I would not hesitate to use my Army-issue .45 in the event I deemed it necessary to do that. I'd call 9-1-1 in the process of dealing with the @#$%^&* who broke into my house or my neighbors' and awaiting the police officers' arrival to clean up the aftermath as dictated by the situation when they got there.

First off, I hope they don't call me. I'm in Iraq and won't be there in enough time to put their fire out. :p

Secondly, it'll be great to know that there's someone always willing to protect those who can't protect themselves. I'm in the military, not a cop, so I have no business protecting lives I guess. Sorry for being useless to our nation.

Besides you not being able to come to put out a fire, you are also not equiped, nor trained, nor have the necessary fellow fire fighters to do the job correctly.

That is why we have a fire department.

Pretty simple really.

Yes there is, just because an attacker is down, does not mean he will stay down, he can get up again and attack you again.

Even the police continue to beat people they apprehend until they finally get handcuffs on them, some even keep beating them after the cuffs are on - interfering with a police officer, any police officer, because he is hitting someone who is on the ground, will get you into a boatload of trouble.

I agree that there is a good chance that the person being beaten is not a criminal, but to stake your life on which of 2 strangers is actually a non-criminal (if any), and entering into the fight yourself, is totally stupid.

IF you drive by and see two teenage gangs fighting, which side are you going to join in, and how are you going to decide which ones YOU are going to beat?

I'll tell you what I did do when I saw this sort thing happen a few years ago:

I pulled over at a safe distance, so that my licence plate was out of sight of the assailents, kept the car running, called 911, and waited until the police arrived. I didn't have a camera phone back then, but I gave a full description of the event.

Just the fact that someone had pulled over was enough to get the people to stop beating the person.

That's why I have no sympathy for people who drive right by a beating and don't even bother to call 911 or pull over. Well, that's not true. I can understand that a mother or father with small children in their car may not want to have their children witness such an event, and fully understand them contuing to drive and calling 911 without stopping.
