The movie was good, not great, but definitely not bad. The movie felt a little small for this phase of Marvel movies, but that may be by design (i.e., it was shot like a 90s movie, especially the hard wink to Independence Day). It was much better than Wonder Woman, although I find DC stuff boring.

I will have to give it another look so I can dig a little deeper into the film content. As a non-comic reader, I couldn’t care less about changes made, so as long as the story is coherent and makes sense (e.g., Joker did not fall into vat of acid or create Two-Face as occurred in Nolan universe).

It is so amazing that you went to a movie you were planning on hating and ended up hating it.

I usually just skip those movies if I think I won't like it. Seems like that's the strategy most use, but I guess not always...

When 'Captain Marvel' Became a Target, the Rules Changed
I am reminded of IMDb removing its forums, Rotten Tomatoes removing user comments for critics, and other changes to websites brought about by trolls and/or threats. These folks probably argue to themselves that the movies couldn't stand up to the scrutiny, yet they fail to miss the fact that attempting to skew the numbers with a negative campaign defeats the purpose of the rating systems.

I think this movie as a flashpoint is not surprising, it says something about subconscious sexism; I would say the same thing about racism and Black Panther, which ironically is now used by some detractors to attack this film as a failure if it does not achieve particular box office numbers. I think the fact that MCU threads on this forum that are not about Black Panther and Captain Marvel have so few posts in comparison points to an obvious fact: people (mostly men) who are so virulently angry at this fun superhero movie would benefit from self-examination. The quality of the film is not the problem, it is far better than The Incredible Hulk or Thor: The Dark World, so it's fairly evident to me that the issue is resentment of shared space (it certainly comes across that way when you demand a woman with a female lead have elements that you have not required of films with male leads).

This was a Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 quality movie, which is good, but not great. It can't hold a candle to Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Black Panther, or Spider-Man: Homecoming (my top 3 for MCU movies).

I'm annoyed that they turned a strong black male into the comedy relief.

I'm annoyed that they broke up an intact black family with a strong black father and turned them into the stereotyped black single mother.

I'm annoyed that they deprecated the first black female superhero to a sidekick supporting the blonde.

And none of that was necessary to have a strong female superhero, if they had stuck to the comics and made Monica Rambeau the superhero that succeeded Mar-vell.

    FYI -

There's a functional difference between a "progressive" and a "social justice warrior".

A "progressive" is the kind of person who would politely stand outside city hall with a banner to protest a recent decision. These people want change, and are usually willing to work within the system... even if they don't understand quite how or why the system works in the first place. Generally, you can reason with these people and help them see what's going on.

A "social justice warrior" is the kind of person who would wait behind city hall to hit the mayor with a brick. They don't care about any system that doesn't agree with them, and will burn everything down around them to make the change they want to see happen. These people have all too often closed their minds off, and may even attack anyone who tries to call them to repentance.

I say this not as stereotype, but from personal experience in dealing with both types of people.

Ever see a self-professed "feminist" try to explain that it's OK for such-and-such other woman to be bullied and harassed for having the "wrong" political views? I have.

The person with the brick in this analogy are the people attempting to destroy the movie’s Rotten Tomatoes rating, spreading lies about audience attendance, and spending every waking moment attacking a movie that probably wouldn’t have gotten as much attention if not for their negative campaign.

I always thought it said something positive for Stan Lee and crew to so spicily parody themselves.
