Q: How much will it cost to buy recreational marijuana in Washington?

A: That’s hard to pin down. Estimates put prices between $12 and $25 a gram, including taxes. Main Street Marijuana in Vancouver estimates it will sell dried flowers for $12 to $15 a gram. For comparison, in Oregon medical marijuana dispensaries, cannabis generally sells for $7 to $12 per gram. Black market marijuana sells for $5 to $10 per gram in the Portland area.

It appears that legalizing and taxing drugs will not actually make them cheaper..

Anyone with a gram of common sense should have been able to see that.

I think it's still drastically going to impact the illegal market.

Why not pay a little extra and play it safe now that you can?

Have you ever met a stoner?

Most of the ones I know aren't that cheap lol.

Nor are the ones I've known. In fact, most of the ones I've known preferred to spend more to get the premium stuff.

Additionally, price issues aside, having a legal outlet opens up the market to a whole ton of people who otherwise would've shied away from precisely because it was illegal.

Hi, Nice to meet ya!

Then you know they'll never pay a little more.
Nonsense. You're not just "paying more." You get something more for what you pay.

I think it's still drastically going to impact the illegal market.

Why not pay a little extra and play it safe now that you can?

You get peace of mind.

The peace of mind knowing that you don't have to deal with any shady characters that happen to know a friend who knows a guy who might be able to hook up an 1/8 but it'll be on his time when he's around and you gotta meet him down the street and around the corner from his place because he thinks his house might be under surveillance. Etc.

None of that nonsense anymore.

You just walk into a specific business. They check your ID much like they do at a bar. They have a counter you walk up to and select whichever buds look best to you and are within your price range. You pay at a register, tax is included in the sale so the state benefits from this. And then you just go on your merry way home.

And that's it. Why anyone would want to criminalize and pay to incarcerate people who are doing only that, is beyond me.

But yeah... Potheads aren't that stupid. If the price of a gram shot up to something like... Idk $50 a gram -something ridiculous, most would just stop smoking or go back to buying off the street.

what was the black market value prior to legalization?

That's the black market value of weed in Oregon where it's still illegal.

And why do I not see anything about these numbers in the article linked?

Scroll down.

It's still illegal to sell weed in Oregon. The black market stuff is still cheaper than the legal stuff in Washington.

If you know your dealer, why would you switch?

The legal stuff is going for around $30 a gram.

But, again, Seattle’s black market with $8 grams and ounces as low as $160-$200 will pick up at least some of those buyers (plus, many MMJ growers will switch to the black market, increasing supply).

The black market is cheaper.

Here's how much the legal stuff will price at.

She said the first pot delivery will come early Tuesday. Two-gram bags will sell for $54 each. But the shipment of just 2,265 small bags won't come close to enough product for the 5,000 people they expect to start lining up before doors open at noon.

Quality and also convenience .

The legal stuff is going for around $30 a gram.
Which can be of low quality. The prices are also very different from place to place.

Black Market may be cheaper but it's not convenient nor is the quality always consistent or good for that matter. With Stores you have choice and the quality is usually much better than the black market.

If that always worked, there would be no Walmart, Target, Payless Shoes, or fast food restaurants.
