What helped for me was that I started to be more vulnerable in my prayers. In the beginning I prayed for general things, like wisdom and discernment. But I felt a longing for intimacy, so I started to say what was in my heart.
"Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart." (Jeremiah 29:12-13)
When I come to him when I'm in need and he answers my prayers, it reassures me that he really is there and cares.
