Can anyone explain Lk 2:35

Mary was to see the Lord Jesus crucified.

I think we need to read the verse before this.

Because of Jesus, people's real thoughts would be exposed.

The word of God is a sword to discern hearts > Hebrews 4:12-13. And Jesus is the Word who has been discerning people's hearts.

So, I can see how the prophet could mean that this sword would also discern Mary. She would be tested.

That's true but how are the thoughts of many revealed because of that

Well, Jesus might do something which certain people did not like. And His actions could then bring them out in the open, because of how they reacted.

Jesus told that guy to sell all He had and give to the poor. The guy had felt he was doing fine, but what Jesus told him to do got him sad. So, Jesus exposed if he was really about God, or not.

At LUKE.2:11, an angel announced to the shepherds in the fields that a Savior , who is Christ the Lord, was about to be born in a manger in Bethlehem.

About 30 years later, most of the Jews rejected Jesus as their Christ/Messiah/Savior because Jesus did not want to fight the Roman occupiers and give them back their kingdom of earth, ie Israel/Judah.(JOHN.6:15) Instead, Jesus Christ only wanted to give them a kingdom of heaven.(MATTHEW.4:17, JOHN.3:16) Even Jesus's own family, ie Mary & Joseph, his brothers, etc did not believe in Him.(JOHN.7:5, MARK.6)

So, this was the sword that pierced through Mary's soul and revealed the greedy political/worldly thoughts of many Jewish hearts.(LUKE.2:35, MATTHEW.16:16)

Even Jesus's own family, ie Mary & Joseph, his brothers, etc did not believe in Him.(JOHN.7:5, MARK.6)

The verses you cite say say nothing about Mary or especially Joseph's (lack of) faith. Joseph had probably passed away by this time.
