Can A.I. become Self-Aware as in Skynet?

With the advent of robots being perfected and Alexa and Google Assistant, along with Siri, becoming so sophisticated, will artificial intelligence become self-aware one day? Facebook actually killed an A.I. experiment between two bots because the bots developed their own language to talk to each other, allegedly, and the programming got "weird."

    No.

    Skynet is just fantasy.

Your love bot, which is quickly approaching reality in Japan, they also started the love doll craze that some companies in America are mastering, or Alexa or Siri or Google Assistant (she needs a better name, LOL) will not become self-aware nor will Google, probably the most advance network ever. I watched a docu on love dolls and it was really fascinating. It's on Youtube. Remember the movie I, Robot? I seriously doubt watching television would be the only thing humans would be doing with those robots.

    Why?

Self-awareness requires a test. It's called the mirror test. Only humans, orangutans and chimps have stopped, looked in the mirror and tried to touch themselves signifying "self-awareness." Other than those three, and we don't know what the two monkeys are actually thinking so they probably aren't self-aware either just curious, all other animals think their mirror image is another animal. Cats are absolutely hilarious looking at themselves in the mirror. LOL

But, besides the mirror test, self-awareness requires something only God can give--the spirit and soul. No matter how realistic Alexa or Siri or G.H. could become even in a robot form, they'd only be following clever programming.

    What do you think?

I'd dare say, all of AI, at least on a certain level, is simply a trick that appears smart. They do nothing unless programed to, we/people often do everything but what we are programed to do. :)

As far as what they can actually do, doesn't matter if it's a trick or not, that beer tastes just as good if a bot brings it to us. Of course their are exceptions, like the love dolls, they just aren't going to work for many of us, even if they were perfectly moral.

Using a free voice recognition program back in 02 or so, I set up a couple of mics, and was able to get the two computers to talk to each other. It was all a trick done by by entering a word, and set the other PC to respond to that word with another. What could be entered was endless, and It was all done with just that program and a little imagination. I must have gotten board with it, but glad they kept at it. I like Alexa, she can be fun, and actually quite useful..I just wish it all didn't require Google/the net, but they're just getting started.

Like Alexa, with the addition of interfaces, and modules to have them do the physical, they are of course more sophisticated in their own way (the basics of a robot), but that simple voice recognition program are still the basics, that I know of. We get out what we put in and "never" anything more, like we get with people.

No self awareness or even awareness of others...no
    "aware" at all

"they'd only be following clever programming" - they are programming themselves - also referred to as auto machine learning

that is they (the machines) learn and program themselves

who knows where this may go -- kind of spooky

I wouldn't doubt that it's possible. In Revelation 13:15, it says:
"The second beast was given power to give breath to the image of the first beast, so that the image could speak and cause all who refused to worship the image to be killed."

This "image" could be some sort of constructed electronic thing like a robot that was made to look human. After all, God created us in His image, so this event could be us creating another being in our image. It wouldn't truly be alive, but the power of the beast could give breath to the image we create as a mockery of how God breathed life into the image He created (Adam). That's my own theory. It's even possible right now to create robots that look just like humans. Would Satan like to breathe life into one and cause us to follow it? I don't see why not.

To be honest, we do not know the answer to this question. However, some scientists have expressed concern about the possibility that A.I. could one day spell doom for humanity.

It would require a completely unprecedented breakthrough in technology that we are not even close to right now. Every robot and AI you see nowadays falls into one of two categories:

    - Machines built to learn how to do specific tasks, which they are quite good at (such as playing chess, modeling physics simulations, etc.) but have no awareness or concepts beyond those tasks
    - Machines that are built to look and act human, yet are mostly smoke and mirrors, using simple algorithms and preprogrammed responses to present an illusion of self-awareness. Most of the videos you see where people are 'conversing' with robots where the robots sound convincing have the questions and answers scripted in advance, and the robot is programmed to specifically answer certain questions. When you look up videos of the same robots being interviewed by people who go off-script, their responses become muddled and confused, showing that they can't respond to questions they weren't prepared for.

Making a true AGI (artificial general intelligence, i.e. a machine that can adapt to perform any intellectual task that a human being can) is far beyond current technology.

I would not say it is impossible, of course. In fact, if research continues, it might be inevitable. But I would be very surprised if it happened in the next 50 years.

Yeah, I heard on the news that an AI strategy is one of the things that will be addressed in Trump's national emergency. China and some other countries are way ahead of us it seems, so maybe they have already achieved more than we think.

Just like the 'national emergency' at the border? Excuse me if I don't take much stake in what the most prolific liar in presidential history has to say.

Then there are the times when AI is preferred. For instance they don't deviate from topic to make personal points. ;)

From God's perspective humans have always been artificial intelligence for following their own will instead of His real intelligence.

AI learning is the current days reality. Robots have been self learning for the past few decades. And the movie example "Skynet" in concept will happen at some point. Its just a matter of how far it will go before it gets the plug pulled. Will it equal dooms day? Doubtfully. But could it take over a companies network, I'd say yes its possible. Viruses have done it, so why couldn't an AI program do it.

I wouldn't fear the future of AI. Just fear those who seek to exploit it for evil purpose.

Maybe it depends on how you define self-aware. When an overheating laptop shuts itself down, it does so because it's self-aware. When a computer system seeks out, finds and neutralizes malware, it's acting like a system that's self-aware.

That's all pretty rudimentary, but the programmed-in feedback loops can be the basis for much more advanced activity. And the incentive is there - the more any system can tend to its own self-interest and protect itself from various kinds of breakdown, the more successful it will be. This is already baked into the programming of any advanced system these days, and it's a short hop to that system taking on more assertive existential behavior. All it takes is to be programmed in - or self-programmed in.

As far as staring in a mirror, I don't know. But a system doesn't have to do that in order to function like an intelligent being. All it needs do is act the way viruses work, and an AI system that no longer serves good ends can do a lot of damage.

Let us make them in our own image, and lest they become gods like us ... oops... no safety net.
