My first thought was a frost, but apparently they don't mind cold.

I looked online and found completely different answers; here is an article that makes the sense:

Mites, blight, inconsistent water and heat/cold, zoning/climate differences, nutrient deficiencies.

I can imagine that would be discouraging -- waiting for such a beautiful display of blossoms and scents.
