California to become sanctuary State.

California has 58 counties and 40 of the county sheriff's are against California becoming a sanctuary State.

Time to move higher up on top of the mountain.

A sanctuary city or state is a city or state that refuses to follow the law regarding immigration.
I thought State’s Rights were very important in America (more important to the people within the State than Federal laws).

Did I get it backwards?

This isn't about states' rights. This is about whether cities and states have to follow the law.

Mexico is winning California back purely by immigration.

What is a sanctuary state?
Been here?
Sanctuary city - Wikipedia
In the United States and Canada, a sanctuary city (French: ville sanctuaire, Spanish: ciudad santuario) is a city that limits its cooperation with the national government effort to enforce immigration law. Leaders of sanctuary cities want to reduce the fear of deportation and possible family break-up among people who are in the country illegally so that such people will be more willing to report crimes, use health and social services, and enroll their children in school. Municipal policies include prohibiting police or city employees from questioning people about their immigration status and refusing requests by federal immigration authorities to detain people beyond their release date, if they were jailed for breaking local law

Yeah, that’s what it looks from the position of an outsider looking in.

Wasn’t your civil war fought because the southern parts did not agree with the laws that the northern parts wanted to enforce on them?

How is this different?

This may seem daft questions but not being American I’ve not learnt about this in school.

Don’t states set their own laws about this kind of thing?

No.

Yeah, that’s what it looks from the position of an outsider looking in.

Not exactly. It wasn't merely that the South disagreed with the law, but that the federal government was using its power to hurt the Southern states.

Remember, although many people consider the states to be subordinate to the federal government now, this occurred before the Progressive movement, when states were still considered to be sovereign. So in that time, this was seen as an act of aggression by the Union (hence, the name, "War of Northern Aggression").

The last straw was when the federal government blockaded Charlston and then, as the kids say, it was on.

This is just a bunch of whiney Communists refusing to follow laws they don't like.

Conservatives like to forget a lot of details about the Civil War. They love the flags, statues, "heritage", and anything else that provides a pretense for cosplaying as antebellum dandies, but they'll quickly turn a blind eye towards all the slavery and legal implications that came along with it.

It was about slavery.

In fact the southern states wanted to stop the northern states from making slavery illegal by state law. The confederacy was opposed to states rights in this situation, tossing that argument pretty firmly out the window.

not about federal issues. There are certain things that are controlled by the federal government and who legally can get in is one of those things. Same with treaties, defend and money. For example, each state DOES have a national guard, but they mostly handle state issue and the federal government CAN call them up in a time of need.

because immigration is covered under federal, not state law.

Federal law = federal enforcement.

....and federally funded.

Our local tax dollars should go to support our local police....not rounding up and detaining illegal immigrants in locally funded jails...

Funny story, in light of the slavery analogy brought up earlier in the thread. IIRC, when the state of Pennsylvania was reminded by the federal government that they were required to assist in the capture and return of fugitive slaves (as mandated by the Constitution), they responded by informing their local police forces that while they, of course, were not going to prohibit them from locating and detaining runaway slaves, they merely reminded them that as it was not part of the law of the state of Pennsylvania, they would not be paid for any such efforts. ...as it turned out, not many cops were enthusiastic to chase down slaves on their own dime.

I suspect many of today's law enforcement would feel similarly about rounding up suspected "illegals" if that were the case.
