California shows its extremism, attacking democracy and capitalism at the same time

California, through its education department, is attacking capitalism as well. As noted in a Wall Street Journal column by longtime education reformer Williamson Evers, the state’s draft “Ethnic Studies Model Curriculum,” which is self-defined as the “xdisciplinary [sic], loving, and critical praxis of holistic humanity,” describes capitalism “as a ‘form of power and oppression,’ alongside ‘patriarchy,’ ‘racism,’ ‘white supremacy’ and ‘ableism.’”
Propaganda. Editorializing. Is there also a section pertaining to American Exceptionalism?

Not putting the President's name on the ballot is not the same thing as not allowing the citizens of California to vote for him.

If you'd like a slightly less...excited...view of what it's about:
https://www.sacbee.com/news/local/education/article233315242.html
The California Department of Education has posted a draft of its proposed ethnic studies curriculum – the first state-level curriculum on the academic subject in the country – and is asking for public feedback.

Until Aug. 15, members of the public can view the high school curriculum on the department’s website, fill out a feedback form and send it to ethnicstudies@cde.ca.gov.

The publication of the draft curriculum marks a step in the implementation of a bill passed in 2016 that requires the State Board of Education to develop an ethnic studies curriculum by 2020 to serve as a guideline for local school districts.

That's edifying but not the issue I focused upon for discussion.

But it's a good reason to not bother reading the rest of your link. I would rather see the actual text of the proposal before making a comment on it.

Now there is an intelligent reply. Since, in your estimation only, the article allegedly misrepresented something, then they automatically misrepresented, apparently, everything else in the article. A better approach would have been to just admit mistakenly addressing an issue that is not an issue being discussed as opposed to conjuring up the poor retort above.

Thanks,
Thanks, tulc. I'm looking at the intro and overview section now, and it does not seem to be much of a threat to the survival of Western Civilization after all.

Of course, no one ever alleged the proposal was "much of a threat to the survival of Western Civilization."

Maybe you could do better and follow along. The proposed Ethnic Studies includes treating capitalism as oppressive. Of course, that proposal is propaganda, editorializing.

Have you actually studied the proposal or just read that hysterical editorial you linked to?

No, the proposal does not say that capitalism as such is oppressive. It encourages exploring the possibility that capitalism has been used as an oppressive tool of imperialism.

Oh, you actually want to have a dialogue about the issue now. How fortunate. For now, I ignore your hyperbolic use of the word "hysterical."

Some examples of systems of power are: white supremacy, capitalism, and patriarchy...

Systems of power can be analyzed using the four “I”s of oppression (ideology, institutional, interpersonal, and internalized).

So, capitalism is an example of a "system of power." Ergo, capitalism can be analyzed as oppression and in doing so, using one of the four "I"s of oppression. Pretty simple.

To the contrary, the proposal does treat capitalism as oppressive. Capitalism is an instance of a "system of power" and a "system of power" can be analyzed as oppression by using one of the four "I"s of oppression. Pretty simple.

Capitalism is a system of power--that's a fact. Whether any particular instance of it is oppressive is subject to analysis. That's a fact, too. I really don't see what you are on about, unless you believe that capitalism should be above critical analysis.

It should be noted that the article is an opinion piece. Its author, Quin Hillyer, is a Republican. And since he's a Republican, his opinion on anything liberal should be taken with a grain of salt, IMO.

Case in point... your following post and tulc's post with the other linked article.

Capitalism is a system of power--that's a fact.

And the evidence for this fact is? Or are you invoking ipse dixit?

I really don't see what you are on about

Hard to miss it...treating capitalism as oppressive is editorializing, it is propaganda.

You mean teachers/students shouldn't be allowed criticize capitalism in school?
tulc(wonders if the same "rule" should apply to all other forms of economic systems as well?)

Criticize is different from editorializing, and propagandizing capitalism as oppressive.

Case in point... your following post and tulc's post with the other linked article.

Now there's a rational argument...rational if one were to ignore the Genetic Fallacy of your argument. Borrowing your syllogism above, your posts indicate you are either moderate or liberal, and since you are either moderate or liberal, then "anything" you comment upon in this thread "should be taken worth a grain of salt." Except, well, your post invoking the Genetic Fallacy "should be taken with a grain of salt."

Of course, it is easy to be so dismissive when they ignore the following:

Some examples of systems of power are: white supremacy, capitalism, and patriarchy...

Discussions of systems of power should include both the struggles that come with being entangled and impacted by these systems, but also resistance to them. Systems of power can be analyzed using the four “I”s of oppression (ideology, institutional, interpersonal, and internalized).
