It also notes:

In addition, this tally does not include“indirect deaths.” Indirect harm occurs when wars’ destruction leads to long term, “indirect,”consequences for people’s health in war zones, for example because of loss of access to food, water, health facilities, electricity or other infrastructure

A Stars and Stripes article regarding the study:

The cost of post 9/11 wars hit $5.9 trillion, 480,000 lives lost, study says

Some quotes. emphasis mine

The price for America’s longest wars has surpassed more than $5.9 trillion and at least 480,000 lost lives, according to a new study released by the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs at Brown University.

The study’s death estimates include nearly 7,000 U.S. servicemembers, nearly 8,000 U.S. contractors, more than 100,0000 military and police members from other countries, more than 244,000 civilians and more than 100,000 opposition fighters.

Frequently, during discussions of a cop shootings...particularly those where the cip might have gotten it wrong, or made a mistake....it's frequently claimed by those in the military that such things don't happen in the military.

The reality is that without the scrutiny imposed on the police force..these sorts of things happen all the time in the military and are dismissed by the flimsiest of reasons.

Drone strikes pose little risk to Americans--unless a country decides to retaliate in kind.

They are more "surgical" than they used to be, but civilians still die.

Perhaps because Trump fears our youth may copy his "heel spur" scam, his administration has relaxed rules for conducting drone strikes and is set to have much more during his administration...

He is continuing the trend started in Obama's later years to rely more on mercenaries, drone strikes, and special forces. As a result the American people have it less on their radar because they don't see massive deployments or casualties.

Here is an article that talks about our increasing reliance on mercenaries over the years:

Amidst reports of increasing airstrikes as part of the United States’ strategy to target Taliban leaders and “set the conditions for a political settlement”, civilian casualties from aerial operations continued to increase throughout the first half of 2019 as compared to the same period in 2018. The number of airstrike incidents and civilian casualties resulting from this tactic also increased in the second quarter of 2019 as compared to the first quarter. From 1 January to 30 June 2019, aerial operations caused 519 civilian casualties (363 deaths and 156 injured), 150 of which were child casualties (89deaths and 61injured). This represents a 39 per cent increase in overall civilian casualties from this tactic in comparison to the first half of 2018.
