Trump actually brought that up, but the military explained to him, exactly what you're saying..
It’s a common mistake. My nephew was in the National Guard and drove trucks. But he could not use that skill in the real world.

The trucks in the military drive differently. And they generally don’t have 53’ trailers behind them, so backing is way different. There’s no need for the military to train soldiers to drive civilian vehicles.

This is kind of a tangent, but I would love it if the military did a better job of cross-training and cross-certifying its members in the civilian versions of their military jobs, so that those individuals had an easier time transitioning to the civilian labor force.

That makes no sense, really. I understand the sentiment, but the military trains on the equipment it has. There’s no need to spend money on buying equipment that they don’t use just to train somebody for a job outside of the military.

Yeah, that’s what we need. Soldiers who drive military vehicles trying to drive big rigs.

You apparently don't know that the military uses tractor trailers.

It only takes a week or so to learn to drive backwards.

Are you saying the 8 weeks of training that my students go through is too much?

More than 8 hours of driving backwards? I was doing that at the age of 3.
Granted....I practiced a lot of hours.

My H was in shipping department for almost 40 years, and dealt with at least 40-50 trucks a day. It was crazy town in his office. He had deliveries and pick ups 24/7, and he is glad he is retired at this point. He can't imagine it being worse. I get the impression the circumstance was bad at one point, and just has got worse as the years passed.

I think what you said about 'good drivers' is more sound. I remember him having a conservation with someone, and they were speaking about truck drivers. He mentioned the decent ones are hard to find, but the steering wheel holders tend to be more the norm these days.

Hopefully, the incentives to come into the industry will help. 8 weeks and having a career is pretty good if you think about it.

Semi trailers? I highly doubt that.

Most parents don't allow their kids to drive trucks in any direction until they're at least 16.

On the farm, you can drive anything you can drive at any age, most anywhere.

That's true. But at age 3? I can see sitting on Dad's lap and steering, but that's about all.
