Gillian Gibbons, 54, from Liverpool, was arrested at at Khartoum's Unity High School yesterday, and accused of insulting the Prophet of Islam.
Her colleagues said that they feared for her safety after reports that groups of young men had gathered outside the Khartoum police station where she was taken and were shouting death threats.

In a country that has seen war and starvation, it's good to see that the important things are being looked after.

Perhaps the police and their group of "supporters" need a good dose of starvation to make them a bit more thankful to be alive, and for the people like this lady who bother to educate them.

Almost every Muslim man and his dog around the world is called Muhammed, yet naming a teddy bear Muhammed is blasphemous? They should show some respect as I reckon teddys have far more brains than most of these Muslims.

I don't see any difference between condemning people to hell for holding an opinion that someone should be given 40 lashes for naming a stuffed-bear Mohammad, and actually holding the latter opinion. Both of them belong to a more barbaric age and should be mocked, ridiculed and marginalized.

KHARTOUM (Reuters) - Sudanese authorities began questioning a British teacher on Tuesday arrested for insulting Islam after her young students named a teddy bear Mohammad.

Gillian Gibbons, a 54-year-old teacher at the Unity High School in Khartoum, was arrested on Sunday after complaints from parents.

"She has been transferred for questioning," said one police official in the station where she was being held.

The official said a decision was possible on Tuesday from the investigating authorities as to whether charges would be brought against Gibbons.

If convicted of insulting Islam, she could be sentenced to 40 lashes, six months in prison or a fine, lawyers said.
Teachers at the school said Gibbons had asked her class of 7-year-olds to choose their favourite name for the teddy bear and 20 of the 23 had voted for Mohammad.

Unity director Robert Boulos had said the school would be closed until January because he was afraid of reprisals in mainly Muslim Khartoum.

In 2005 a Sudanese paper was closed for three months and its editor arrested for reprinting articles questioning the roots of the Prophet Mohammad, a move which prompted angry protests.

British officials are expected to continue talks with Sudan over a teacher accused of insulting the Prophet Mohammed.

Gillian Gibbons, 54, allowed her class of seven-year-olds at the Unity High School, Khartoum, to name a teddy bear Mohammed.

If convicted, Ms Gibbons, of Aigburth, Liverpool, could face 40 lashes, a large fine or a jail spell.

The exercise was part of the class's study of animals and their habitats and the name was chosen by the children.

Ms Gibbons, who is being held in a Khartoum prison, was arrested on Sunday after complaints were made - though the naming occurred in September.

Reports given to More4 News on Monday night suggested Ms Gibbons had been charged under sharia law with "insulting ideology and religion".

The mother-of-two moved to Sudan this summer leaving her post as a deputy headteacher at Dovecot Primary School in Liverpool.

Former colleagues and neighbours spoke of their shock on Monday and described Ms Gibbons as innocent and somebody who "wouldn't harm a fly".

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office refused to confirm on Monday night whether Ms Gibbons had been charged...
