At least one of the Capitol riot defendants has flipped against the Proud Boys, agreeing to provide information that could allow the Justice Department to bring a more severe charge against the group's leadership, according to an attorney involved in the case.

The development is the first indication that people charged in the insurrection are cooperating against the pro-Trump extremist group. Federal prosecutors have made clear they are focused on building conspiracy cases against leadership of the Proud Boys and paramilitary groups like the Oath Keepers.

A New Jersey man accused of being at “the front line” of violence during the Jan. 6 insurrection boasted about his involvement online—then googled “Countries where you can buy citizenship” once he realized he would probably be caught, prosecutors say.

Christopher Joseph Quaglin was arrested Wednesday in New Brunswick, New Jersey on a slew of charges, including assaulting an officer and civil disorder. Prosecutors allege that he can be seen in a black helmet, gas mask, and a MAGA shirt “repeatedly assaulting” several cops guarding the Capitol, according to a criminal complaint.

Quaglin even pointed directly to his involvement in a Facebook Live after the riot. “When you guys see the footage, I was the guy in red, white, and blue uhh hoodie and black helmet...I’m absolutely on a loop on Fox News...I got punched pretty good...It was a great time, I got bumps and bruises,” he said in the selfie-style livestream.

Texas Man Who Boasted About Being at Capitol Riot Plotted to Blow Up Amazon Data Centers: Feds

A Texas man who boasted about being at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 has been charged for plotting to bomb data centers in Virginia in hopes of destroying “about 70% of the internet,” federal prosecutors said Friday. The feds were first tipped off to Seth Aaron Pendley’s alleged plans when a “concerned citizen” reached out about disturbing posts on MyMilitia.com in which a user named “Dionysus” said he was going to “conduct a little experiment” that he hoped would lead to “death.”

A Lexington County man suspected of involvement with the deadly Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol pleaded guilty Friday to federal charges related to threatening messages he left a prosecutor, warning her she could be harmed if something happened to a Proud Boys leader.

James Giannakos of Gilbert pleaded guilty at the federal courthouse in Columbia to making threatening phone calls to a former assistant U.S. attorney. The plea means Giannakos could face up to five years in federal prison and up to a $250,000 fine, although Judge Terry Wooten did not impose sentence on Friday.

“Miss (name of former prosecutor redacted), my name’s James. I just wanted you to know that if anything happens to Mr. Enrique Tarrio, the same thing will happen to you and your family.

From a secure room in the Capitol on Jan. 6, as rioters pummeled police and vandalized the building, Vice President Mike Pence tried to assert control. In an urgent phone call to the acting defense secretary, he issued a startling demand.

    “Clear the Capitol,” Pence said.

These new details about the deadly riot are contained in a previously undisclosed document prepared by the Pentagon for internal use that was obtained by The Associated Press and vetted by current and former government officials.

The timeline adds another layer of understanding about the state of fear and panic while the insurrection played out, and lays bare the inaction by then-President Donald Trump and how that void contributed to a slowed response by the military and law enforcement. It shows that the intelligence missteps, tactical errors and bureaucratic delays were eclipsed by the government’s failure to comprehend the scale and intensity of a violent uprising by its own citizens.

With Trump not engaged, it fell to Pentagon officials, a handful of senior White House aides, the leaders of Congress and the vice president holed up in a secure bunker to manage the chaos.

Part of a much longer thoughtful piece on 'civil religion' in the United States.

One of the insurrection leaders, standing defiantly on the dais of the Senate chamber, actually called on his fellow protesters to join him in prayer.

"Jesus Christ, we invoke your name!" he shouted, as recorded in a video by a writer for The New Yorker magazine.

Among those upset by that scene was Myles Werntz, a theology professor at Abilene Christian University.

"When you have someone like you saw on Jan. 6 — someone who gets up into the Senate, declaring that the violence that is being done that day is being done in the name of God — that's when I think you find that religious language has gone amok."

The widespread display of Christian symbols on Jan. 6, in fact, has triggered a general backlash against religious nationalism in the country.

    Seems like an overreaction....

Does he also support stripping welfare benefits from any citizens involved in the riots over the summer of 2020?

Maybe, or perhaps he's smart enough to see the difference between that off-topic subject and members of the armed forces participating in a violent attack on the US Capitol.

    Update

A geophysicist who allegedly beat police officers who were trying to help injured rioters during the US Capitol siege will be jailed before trial, a federal judge ruled Wednesday, citing the man's ham-handed attempt to flee to Switzerland as proof that he poses a literal flight risk.

Sabol took drastic steps after the January 6 insurrection because he "reached a mental breaking point," according to court filings. He traveled from his native Colorado to Boston and booked a flight to Switzerland, where he believed he would be protected from extradition, according to court filings. But he abandoned that plan after seeing law enforcement officers at the airport.

Instead, he rented a car and drove south. He later told investigators that while he was driving he threw his cell phone over a bridge near Boston because he thought he was being tracked.

Motorists spotted his car driving erratically and police pulled him over in Clarkstown, New York, where they found him "covered in blood" from severe cuts on his arm and thighs, according to court filings. He said, according to court documents, "I am wanted by the FBI" because "I was fighting tyranny in the DC Capitol," and notified the officers that "my wounds are self-inflicted and "I am done fighting."

    The Aristocrats!

His lawyers also said Sabol was "lied to" about the 2020 election by former President Donald Trump as well as Trump's personal attorney Rudy Giuliani and longtime political adviser Roger Stone.

Psst! Those guys lied about those things to everybody.
