Tucker Carlson interviews Eduardo Bolsonaro, adviser to his father, President Jair Bolsonaro, about Brazil's gun policies on 'Tucker Carlson Tonight.

I'm not surprised by this! There are lots of spurious framing devices around the issue of self defense in the US by progressives! e.g. lumping suicide in with homicide for instance.

Would not it be better to solve the causes instead of arming yourself to your teeth and reducing few marginal percents that way?

Its not stats, its people who are violent. Keeping them in fear of being more easily killed is not a long term solution to their problems.

The information in the video is misleading. The murder/homicide rate had already dropped significantly prior to the relaxed gun restrictions in Brazil. Since the new laws went into effect the rate has been fairly steady. The reasons for the decrease in homicides appears to be related to several other factors.

Last year [2021], Brazil logged 22 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants, a slight decrease from 23 per 100,000 in 2020. Brazilian police are also the most violent in the world, responsible for at least 6,400 killings in 2021, six times more than their U.S. counterparts, who are in second place worldwide. In Brazil, stunning levels of inequality, impunity, firearms possession, and violent disputes between rival drug gangs are typically blamed for the high murder rate.

In the Americas, Homicide Is the Other Killer Epidemic

Public security scholars, in turn, say that the drop in homicides — which took the lives of 45,433 people in 2019 in Brazil, after a record of more than 65,000 deaths in 2017, according to official Datasus statistics — reflects other factors, such as an aging population (homicides are more common among younger people), better state policies to combat violence, and a truce in the conflict between criminal factions.

The drop in murders in 2019 was mainly driven by the reduction in the first half of the year. As of September of that year, violent deaths rose again month by month, reaching their peak in March 2020 (4,150 deaths in that month), and falling again as of April, a period that coincides with the social isolation measures of the municipality. coronavirus pandemic (about 3,200 from July to September). In the last quarter, violent deaths increased again, approaching the level of 4 thousand deaths per month.

As a result, the Violence Monitor recorded 43,892 violent deaths in 2020, against 41,730 in 2019, a 5% increase in homicides in the country.

Although studies still need to be done to further investigate this variation, public security experts believe that the drop in murders in 2018 and 2019 is the result of multiple factors, including a temporary de-escalation in the factional fight.

Although homicides reached record levels in 2017, most states in the country already had a reduction in murders that year, reflecting the improvement of state security policies, say scholars.

Dois anos de maior acesso a armas reduziu violência como dizem bolsonaristas? - BBC News Brasil

Researchers point out multiple reasons for the reduction. Among them is the increasing "professionalization" of drug gangs, which have learned to compete with each other in less conflictual ways or created self-regulatory mechanisms to reduce casualties within their ranks.

But police forces have also become more effective in dealing with organized crime, with departments sharing more information and cooperating more consistently to reduce gangs' means to control the drug trade from within the prison system.

During President Jair Bolsonaro's presidency, the number of firearms in the hands of civilians doubled — but Violence Monitor researchers say that doesn't have an effect on murder trends, though it may lead to a sharp increase in "circumstantial homicides," such as those resulting from arguments in traffic, bars, and nightclubs.

he said (the first link) that deterrence does not provide sufficient justification for tough sentences like capital punishment.’ There is deterrence there.

the other one. Texas is the only state in the news using capital punishment. The study was inconclusive about Texas and all the other states with high murder rates because it’s not being used for a long time. When they stopped executing people the murder rate started to increase. You can’t hope to get honest statistics because liberals as a whole are against it.

when God used it it was a punishment and deterrent to murder. Capital Punishment: A Christian View and Biblical Perspective
