Why was a person able to touch the painting.
Did he cross ropes or climb over an obstacle?

Why wasn't the picture protected by glass?
It's easier to clean glass then dust a picture.

The child did wrong but some blame lies with the musem.

I saw this on the news.. and wondered the same thing. I probably don't have what it takes to appreciate this type of 'art'.. because I JUST don't see it! :D

Well if you've ever seen a Monet, you will be reminded of a kinder, simpler time when the days went slower and we were surrounded by pretty things. I personally feel kind of nostalgic by the cubic impressionists and how they sort of heralded the mechanization of society and the loss of innocence to Western development.

This gum really is a statement of how commercialism has deprived us of culture. The child is brilliant. We have become people of PEZ and instant soup.

Few paintings in museums are protected by glass. I can't think of one I've ever seen and that incudes visits to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, a Salvador Dali Exhibit, Edinburgh Gallery, and the Tate Modern.

Whether the artwork is crappy or not does not mean the kid was justified in sticking gum on it. If I don't like your landscaping does that mean I can take a crap on your lawn?

There was nothing in my post that mentioned anything about the child being justified in sticking gum on it. My comment was based on my shock that something so hideous was worth a lot of money.

Took the words right out of my mouth.
Who DOES something like that? The kid was TWELVE! That's definitely old enough to know better. What a jerk.

We are still surrounded by beauty

We just don´t see it because we are too busy.

I agree. The child was brilliant. In fact, I would argue it should have knocked the price up significantly. It sends a powerful message to see such a response. It tells us of society today. It tells us of our values. Of where we are headed, as well as where we have been.
I say leave the gum, knock the price up to two million.
