I'm talking about Scripture, though, not Dante.

If the Gates of Hell will not prevail against the Church, it seems extremely unlikely for the Church to have gone into apostacy decades after Christ, only to require God to restore it 1,800 years later in upstate New York.

Nobody doubts that there were individuals who were earnest in their beliefs and who tried to live an upright life.

Rather, the theology is that the direct priesthood authority was lost, and that without this direct authority would-be leaders and philosophers all too often turned to their own wisdom and understanding, leading to the doctrine being confused.
