Would like to have the Messianic viewpoint on this please.

    Deuteronomy 31

26“Take this Book of the Law and place it beside the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, so that it may remain there as a witness against you.

What Book of the Law was this, and why placed beside the ark and not in it, and serve as a witness against for what?

    Shabbat shalom.

My understanding is that it is the Torah; and that the Torah stands as a witness against those who transgress the Torah.

    Specifically,
The same as what is to be read here.
    Deuteronomy 31:
9 So Moses wrote this law and delivered it to the priests, the sons of Levi, who
bore the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and to all the elders of Israel.
10 And Moses commanded them, saying: “At the end of every seven years, at
the appointed time in the year of release, at the Feast of Tabernacles,
11 when all Israel comes to appear before the Lord your God in the place which
He chooses, you shall read this law before all Israel in their hearing.
12 Gather the people together, men and women and little ones, and the stranger who is within your gates, that they may hear and that they may learn to fear the Lord your God and carefully observe all the words of this law,
13 and that their children, who have not known it, may hear and learn to fear the Lord your God as long as you live in the land which you cross the Jordan to possess.

What I mean is specifically what we read here:

    (CLV) Jn 5:45
"Be not supposing that I shall be accusing you to the Father. He who is accusing you to the Father is Moses, on whom you rely.

    (CLV) Jn 5:46
For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me, for he writes concerning Me.

    (CLV) Jn 5:47
Now if you are not believing this writings, how shall you be believing My declarations?"

If we believe in Yahshua; we will believe his fathers words, the Torah. If we believe the Torah; we will obey the Torah. It has been the same since the Garden. If Eve had believed in YHWH's word; she wouldn't have listened to the lie.

    The Torah is truth.

    (CLV) Dt 31:24
It came to be as Moses concluded writing all the words of this law on a scroll until they were finished,

Most would agree that the Torah is the Pentateuch; but first century Israel also included Jubilees as Torah. There is strong evidence that this is the writing of the rightful priesthood, which had been ousted from the temple:

    From 4Q266 Qumran Scrolls:

(For God made) XVI a Covenant with you and all Israel; therefore a
man shall bind himself by oath to return to the Law of Moses, for in it all
    things are strictly defined.

As for the exact determination of their times to which Israel turns a
blind eye, behold it is strictly defined in the Book of the Divisions of
ttie Times into tlieir Jubilees and Weel<s. And on the day that a man
swears to return to the Law of Moses, the Angel of Persecution shall
cease to follow him provided that he fulfils his word: for this reason
Abraham circumcised himself on the day that he knew.

What is the reason why it was placed on the side of the ark rather than in it - along with the tablets of stone with the 10 commandments on them?

I would suppose so that it could be read.

Do you believe that the stone tablets included nothing but the Decalogue; if so, why?

Hebrews 9:4 states that the Ark contained "the golden pot that had manna, and Aaron's rod that budded, and the tablets of the covenant."

    1 Kings 8:
6 The kohanim brought the ark of the covenant of Adonai to its place, into the inner Sanctuary of the House, to the Holy of Holies, under the wings of the cheruvim.
7 For the cheruvim spread out their wings over the place of the ark, and the cheruvim covered the ark and its poles from above.
8 But the poles were so long that the ends of the poles were seen from the Holy Place before the inner Sanctuary, but they could not be seen outside; there they are to this day.
9 Nothing was in the ark except the two tables of stone that Moses put there at Horeb, when Adonai cut a covenant with the children of Israel when they came out of the land of Egypt.

"the golden pot that had manna, and Aaron's rod that budded" pertained to the wilderness wanderings.

There is no mention of the tablets being limited to the Decalogue in this verse.

    Exodus 34:TLV
27 Then Adonai said to Moses, Write these words, for based on these words I have cut a covenant with you and with Israel.
28 So he stayed there with Adonai for 40 days and 40 nights, and he did not eat bread or drink water.
He wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant: these Ten Words.

The more familiar "Ark of the Covenant" is also referred to as:
    The Ark Of The Testimony.

Exodus 25:22. I will meet with you there. I will speak with you from above
    the atonement cover
—from between the two cheruvim that are on
the Ark of the Testimony—about all that I will command you, for Bnei-Yisrael.

The two tablets were also referred to as the tablets of the testimony.
Exodus 31:18. And when He had made an end of speaking with him on
Mount Sinai, He gave Moses two tablets of the Testimony, tablets
of stone, written with the finger of God.

So what was the Testimony associated with the giving of the Ten Words
when God cut a covenant with Israel?

Deuteronomy 4:33. Has a people ever heard the voice of God speaking from the
midst of the fire, as you have heard—and lived?
Deuteronomy 5:21. Then you said, ‘Adonai our God has just shown us His glory and
His greatness, and we have heard His voice from the midst of the fire. This day we
have seen that God speaks with man, and yet he keeps on living.

The fact is that unlike every other commandment, statute, etc...only the
Ten Words/utterances/commandments recorded on the tablets were heard
spoken by the entire congregation. Every other instruction is given through
the intermediation of Moses. This is why the tablets are referred to as tablets
of the "testimony", and the ark of the covenant is also referred to as
the ark of the testimony. It was at Sinai when these commandments were spoken
"they heard the Voice of God from the fire, and lived". By these words did YHVH

    cut a covenant with Israel.

    Exodus 34:
27 Then Adonai said to Moses, Write these words, for based on these words I have
cut a covenant with you and with Israel.
28 So he stayed there with Adonai for 40 days and 40 nights, and he did not eat bread or drink water.
He wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant: these Ten Words.

The statements in the Torah are clear and should require no clarification. The tablets of the testimony
contained the Ten Commandments, for these were the words all the people heard from the fire
on the mount. By these words, and for this reason, they are the basis for the covenant cut at Sinai.

Deuteronomy 9:10. Then the Lord delivered to me two tablets of stone written with the finger of God, and on them were all the words which the Lord had spoken to you on the mountain from the midst of
the fire on the day of the assembly.

Deuteronomy 4:33 Has a people ever heard the voice of God speaking from the midst of the fire,
    as you have heard—and lived?
